As is now the (new) tradition on BSCB, after going through detailed monthly figures for March we explore the year-to-date rankings in Europe to try and extract longer-term trends. Over the First Quarter of 2014, new car sales in Europe are up an extremely encouraging 8% on 2013 to 3,353,180 sales, which means 2014 looks like it will be the first year of growth on the continent since 2007! The VW Golf and Ford Fiesta lead the ranking as they were over the Full Year 2013 and they also deliver the highest gains in the Top 8 at +16% and +10% respectively. The Skoda Octavia goes from #6 after two months to #9 now but is still going (very) strong at +38% with the Audi A3 rounding up the Top 10 for the first time in a Quarterly ranking thanks to sales up a mammoth 52% year-on-year.
Mazda3 sales in Europe have doubled vs. 2013 so far this year.
Boosted by its very first stint inside the monthly Top 10 in March (in its 7 year-career!), the Fiat 500 upgrades to #12 year-to-date with sales up 19% to 46,526, while the Renault Captur gains one spot at #16 and the Peugeot 2008 breaks into the European year-to-date Top 20 for the first time at #20 with 36,097 units. The VW Tiguan is up 14% to #17, the Dacia Sandero up 67% to #18, the Citroen C3 up 32% to #21, Toyota Auris up 25% to #22, Peugeot 308 up 42% to #24 and Citroen C4 Picasso up 73% to #27 thanks to the new generations.
The Mercedes S-Class is up 198% year-on-year so far in 2014.
Beyond the Top 30, let’s salute the Dacia Duster up 30% to #31, Opel Mokka up 57% to #32, the Seat Leon up 59% to #33 and now above its lil sis the Seat Ibiza (#35) to become the brand’s best-seller in Europe for potentially the first time in a year-to-date ranking.
