New car sales in Ukraine are down 10% year-on-year in 2013 to 213,322 registrations, and for now I can only share with you a Top 30 ranking by brands, hopefully models will follow shortly. If the best-selling carmaker in the country, Hyundai, remains unchanged compared to 2012 in spite of sales down a harsh 21% to 18,001 and 8.4% share, the rest of the ranking is completely reshuffled in 2013, with two very big surprises. Firstly, neighbour Lada completely crumbles down, losing more than half its sales year-on-year (-54%) and going from #2 and 8.3% share in 2012 to #11 and 4.3% in 2013…

Hyundai Accent Ukraine 2013Hyundai remains the most popular brand in Ukraine in 2013.

Secondly, Chinese manufacturer Geely shoots up 7 spots to land at a world-best third place thanks to sales up 36% to 16,436 and 7.7% share, even ranked #1 brand a few times in 2013! An exceptional performance indeed for the only Chinese brand in the Top 20, the next two being Chery (#25) and BYD (#27). In other news, thanks to sales declining less than the market (-3%), local carmaker ZAZ is up one spot to #2 and 8.3% share, Toyota is down 2% but up two ranks to #4, while Kia (-18%), Volkswagen (-19%), Skoda (-12%), Nissan (-10%) and Renault (-17%) all lose significant ground. Finally, notice Peugeot (+28%), Citroen (+29%), Bogdan (+86%) and Mazda (+54%) in great shape.

  1. Just a warning that car registration data available from Ukrautoprom often differs from car sales data available from dealers and compiled by Autoconsulting. Sometimes it is just a timing factor, that sales occur before registrations. There could be other differences. The sales data for cars and CV’s typically published here matches the car sales data distributed later through Autoconsulting, but will not necessarily match Ukrautoprom.
