New car sales in Poland are up a solid 7% year-on-year in 2013 to reach 328,426 registrations, and for the first time since 2009 we have a new best-seller this year! The Skoda Fabia edges past (this is the right expression) its big sister the Octavia to finish the year at 11,624 sales (+19%) vs. 11,523 (-26%) for the Octavia, both models commending a 3.5% market share. This result is due to the combination of very robust results for the Fabia in spite of its old age (this generation launched in 2007) and the generation changeover of the Octavia which was a little patchy in Poland. However once the new generation kicked in, the Octavia led the Polish market during the last 4 months of the year and should reclaim the top spot in 2014.
The Toyota Auris topped the Polish sales charts for the first time ever in August.
One side note to this result: Polish car sales data include light commercial vehicles, and without them the Fabia would be #2 with 10,812 sales and 3.7% share vs. 11,463 and 4% for the Octavia. The Ford Focus delivers a very strong year, up 3 spots and 20% on 2012 to land on the third step of the podium at 8,024 units and 2.4%, passing the Toyota Yaris down 1% to #4 even though it topped the monthly ranking in March for first time in 5 years (since August 2008). The VW Golf is up a splendid 28% to #5 while the Opel Astra drops 16% and 3 ranks to #6. The best performer inside the Top 10 this year in Poland is the Toyota Auris: up a huge 129% and 21 spots year-on-year to land at #7 with 7,304 sales and 2.2%, spectacularly dominating the monthly sales charts in August.
The Kia Sportage passes the Nissan Qashqai & Dacia Duster to become the #1 SUV in Poland in 2013.
Other great performers this year in Poland include the Renault Clio up a massive 66% and 12 ranks thanks to the new model to #8, the Kia Sportage up 25% to #9, Hyundai i30 up 37% to #12, Kia Cee’d up 40% to #14, the Skoda Rapid landing at #21 with 3,688 sales for its first full year in market, the Chevrolet Cruze up 62% and 20 ranks to #23, Skoda Citigo more than doubling its 2012 sales to 3,167 at #27, the Toyota RAV4 doing the same and gaining 34 spots to #36, VW Up up 91% to #37 and the Honda CR-V up 50% to #41. Reversely the Fiat Panda drops 58% and 31 ranks to #39. Finally, notice the Renault Captur stopping a few units shorts of an annual Top 50 ranking and peaking at #18 in December.
