For the first time since 2010 and the 4th time overall after 2008–2010, the VW Golf is the most popular car in Finland this year. The 7th generation of the model has clearly struck a chord with Finnish consumers, with Volkswgaen’s legendary nameplate up 20% on 2012 to 5,063 sales and 5% share. The fight with the new generation Skoda Octavia was intense however, with the Czech sedan topping the monthly sales charts 5 times in the last 7 months of the year and finishing at #2 with 4,779 units and 4.7%, up 5% on 2012. Surprise leader last year, the Nissan Qashqai is down 18% to #3 but the new model, just launched, should reverse the trend in 2014.
The other great performer in the Finnish Top 10 in 2013 is the Toyota Auris thanks to the new model with its attractive hybrid and station wagon variants: it is up 94% and 8 ranks on last year to land at #4 with 3,274 sales and 3.2%, meaning both its big and small sisters suffer: the Avensis is down 27% to #5 and the Yaris down 19% to #6. Third superstar of the Top 10: the BMW 3 Series up a fantastic 111% and 21 spots to land in 9th position at 2,248 units and 2.2%. Notice also the Volvo V40 up 183% to #12 for its first full year of sales, the Honda CR-V up 29% and 10 ranks to #15, Audi A3 up 67% to #16, Mercedes A-Class up 126% to #28 and the Mazda6 up 50% to #30.
