After gaining 10% last month, Belgium confirms it is one of a few European countries to resist the doom and gloom that characterises this first half of the year 2013 in the region by gaining a further 9% year-on-year in May to 44,519 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 246,175 units, down just 0.8% on 2012. Interesting (boring?) fact: the entire Top 9 most popular brands are unchanged vs. last month… Volkswagen leads the way at 11.1% share, followed by Renault (8.9%) and Peugeot (7.8%).

Audi impresses once again in 4th place at 7.1% share, a full percentage point above its 2013 YTD level of #7 and 6%. Mercedes is up 25% to #9, Hyundai up 48% to #11, Nissan up 64% to #15, Suzuki up 58% to #18 and Mazda up 80% to #23, but the star of the month in the Belgian brands sales charts is once again Dacia: up an incredible 91% year-on-year in May to 1,775 sales and 4% market share, and breaking into the Top 10 at #10! Belgium illustrates to the perfection the European mega-trend of ‘premium or low-cost’ with most premium brands (Audi, Mercedes, BMW) doing extremely well alongside Dacia.
