Sales of local models in South Korea are down 2% year-on-year in March to 118,217 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 321,420 units, also down 2% on 2012. For only the third time in the last 5 years after February 2011 and August 2012, the Kia Morning (aka Picanto) is the most popular model in South Korea this month thanks to 8,823 sales and 7.5% share, which also enables it to brilliantly top the year-to-date ranking at 23,462 units and 7.3%. It is followed this month by the Hyundai Avante (aka Elantra), climbing back the ladder after a very shy start of year at #2 with 8,346 sales and 7.1%. It is however still #5 year-to-date at 21,285 units and 6.6%.
The Hyundai Sonata is up 2 spots to round up the podium with 8,102 sales and 6.9%, ahead of the Hyundai Grandeur, down 3 ranks after leading the way both in January and February. There are two more Hyundais in the Top 6: the Porter at #5 (-2) and the Santa Fe stable at #6. Other great performers this month include the Kia K3 very solid at #8 with 5,414 units and 4.6% and the Chevrolet Trax up 7 spots to #24 with 1,262 sales for its 2nd month in market.
