Italian car sales are down again in October at -6% and 133,722 registrations, bringing the 2011 year-to-date total to 1,511,006 units, down 11%. The Fiat Panda takes advantage of heavy end-of-stock promotions before the launch of the new generation to keep the lead for a 2nd consecutive month and for the fourth time this year with 9,217 sales and 6.9%. The Fiat Punto comes 2nd at 8,732 units and 6.5% but still holds the 2011 pole position with 106,129 sales and 7% vs. 97,268 and 6.4% for the Panda. This order could change in 2012 with the new generation Panda then in full swing.
The Lancia Ypsilon maintains itself on the podium for the third month in a row at 4,933 units and 3.7% share. It is only the second time ever after January-March 2004 that the Ypsilon nameplate ranks within the Italian podium for 3 months running… The Ford Fiesta stays 4th but drops to 3.4% while the VW Polo has an excellent month at #5 with 3% share. Other good performers this month include the Peugeot 207, up 17 spots on September to #10, the Smart Fortwo up to #12, the Dacia Duster up 8 spots to #20, the VW Tiguan up 23 spots to #31, the BMW X3 up to #37 and its little brother the BMW X1 up to #38.
