In 2004, the Toyota Corolla is the best-selling car in South Africa, and in the passenger car ranking it is followed by either the VW Polo or the Toyota Tazz, a South African oddity exclusive to the region (and very successful in neighbouring Botswana and Namibia) which is none other than a 1988 Toyota Corolla almost identical to the original. The Tazz is even #1 in June with 2,904 sales.
In 2005 the South African market gains 25% to reach 537,605 units. The Toyota Corolla holds the pole position again, establishing itself at 7.3% of the market in the Full Year 2005 ranking. The VW Polo, boosted by its Classic (sedan) version, climbs up to #2 in 2005 with 32,781 sales and 6.1%, and the Toyota Hilux is stable at #4 (5.1%).
The Toyota Tazz is a slightly amended 1988 Toyota Corolla hatchback.
At #3 in 2005 we find another South African curiosity: the VW CitiGolf with 27,928 sales (5.2%). The CitiGolf is exclusive to South Africa and its region and is a restyled 1st generation Golf produced locally and launched in 1985 in the country. The Toyota Tazz is still valiant in 2005, ranking 5th with 23,601 sales and 4.4% share.
