Sweden 1995-1996: Volvo 850 at its best

Swedish car sales are up 9% in ’95 to 169,756 registrations and up 6% in ’96 to 180,181 units. The Volvo 850 delivers its best year ever in ’95, up 10% to 24,514 sales and 14.4% market share. It is then down 8% in ’96 to 22,625 units and 12.3%. The Volvo 900 follows, up a massive 41% in ’95 to 19,351 sales and 11.4%, then down 31% in ’96 to 13,292 units and 7.2%.
The Saab 9000 ranks #3 in ’95, up 33% to 9,537 sales and 5.6% but is down 19% in ’96 to #6 and 7,733 units. In 4th place in ’95 we find the Saab 900 (-18%), it will drop down one spot and 11% in ’96 to #5. The VW Golf reclaims the title of best-selling foreign model in Sweden in ’95 at #5 with 4.7% and keeps it in ’96, climbing onto the podium at #3 with 9,251 sales and 5% share. The Ford Escort (4.4%), Opel Astra (3.8%), Ford Mondeo (3.2%) and Volvo 400 (3%) follow in ’95 while in ’96 the Volvo S40/V40 makes a thunderous arrival directly in 7th place.
