China 1993: First millionaire market, VW Santana first model above 100,000 annual sales
Volkswagen sold 100,030 units of the Santana in China in 1993.
This year more than one million new vehicles were sold in China for the first time, at 1,056,679. That’s a whopping 44.5% year-on-year improvement. Volkswagen (+32.7%) easily keeps the lead yet can’t quite match the market growth, resulting in a lower market share at 10.6%. FAW Tianjin (+127.2%) continues to surge ahead and climbs to 2nd place. FAW (mainly trucks) makes an entrance at #3 ahead of BAW at #4. Toyota (+41.3%) and Nissan (+43.3%) roughly evolve like the market with Changan (#7), Wuling (#8), Honda (#9) and Yuejin (#10) appearing for the first time. Audi goes from 7 sales in 1992 to 26,375 this year, ranking at #11. Peugeot (+21755.8%) also soars at #13.
In the models charts, the VW Santana (+68.6%) widens the gap with the others and becomes the first vehicle to sell over 100,000 units in a single year in China. The FAW Tianjin Xiali (+33%) advances to #2 and is followed by 9 new entrants. The BAW BJ2020/BJ6400 ranks at #3 ahead of the FAW CA1046, Changan Star, Wuling Truck, Honda Accord, Yuejin NJ1041/1061, Audi 100, FAW Tianjin Hijet and Foton Forland. Notice also the Peugeot 505 landing at #16.
