India Full Year 1990: Maruti 800 on top, Tata 407 shoots up 65%

The Indian new vehicle market edges up 1.6% year-on-year in 1990 to 256.516 deliveries, the weakest year-on-year gain since 1985, the first year BSCB has access to India data. Maruti (-5%) and Premier (-2%) even see their volume decline to 43% and 16.2% share respectively. Mahindra (+4%) improves slightly to 14.3% but Hindustan (-10%) resumes its fall to 10.3%. It’s secondary carmakers that sport the most impressive gains: Tata (+58%), Force Motors (+32%), Daewoo (+15%) and Eicher Motor (+12%). The Maruti 800 (-5%) remains ultra-dominant but sees its share thaw to 27.2% vs. 13.1% for the #2, the Premier Padmini (-3%). The Maruti Omnivan (-1%), Mahindra Jeep (+1%) and Hindustan Ambassador (-12%) either see their share stagnate or sink in a Top 5 unchanged on 1989, followed by the Tata 407/608/609 shooting up 65% at #6.
