San Marino, also romantically called the Most Serene Republic of San Marino, is a 61km2 enclave surrounded by Italy, home to 30,000 inhabitants. In 2013 the San Marino new car market is down 14% year-on-year after declining by 18% in 2012… Big event atop the brands ranking: premium Audi manages to edge past its mass-market counterpart Volkswagen, albeit by just one sale: up 2% to 186 units and 17.2% share vs. 185 and 17.1% for Volkswagen, down a harsh 22% on 2012… This makes San Marino one of only a few markets in the world (with Monaco notably) where Audi sells more than Volkswagen. Fiat remains third at 13% share, followed by Suzuki, Opel and Toyota.

San Marino, also romantically called the Most Serene Republic of San Marino, is a 61 square kilometres enclave surrounded by Italy in the North of the country, home to 30,000 inhabitants. The particularity of the San Marino new car market is that although it is technically in Italy, Fiat is much less successful here and German brands rule the roost. However this seems to be changing somehow. Over the first 6 months of 2013, new car sales in the country are down a painful 22% year-on-year to just 585 registrations.

Suzuki Alto San Marino June 2013In spite of sales down 21%, Suzuki remains the #4 brand in San Marino vs. #22 in Italy

Volkswagen remains the most popular brand but with sales falling faster than the market at -36%, its market share has thawed to 16.6% vs. 20.3% a year ago. Reversely, Fiat gains 22% and goes from 10.2% share halfway through 2012 to 15,9% now, only 4 units below VW! Audi rounds up the podium at 13% (-25%), followed by Suzuki (-21%), Renault (+36%) and BMW, up 5 spots and 40% to #6. Notice also Hyundai up 36% and Lancia up 33%.

San Marino, also romantically called the Most Serene Republic of San Marino, is a 61 square kilometres enclave surrounded by Italy which is home to 30,000 inhabitants. The San Marino new car market is behaving very similarly to the Italian one: down 18% year-on-year in 2012 to 1,264 registrations. Even though it is technically part of Italy, Fiat is not the favourite carmaker here and far from it: the Italian brands falls by 29% in 2012 and is down to #3 with 138 sales and 10.9%.

The VAG Group reigns supreme: Volkswagen is up 1% to 238 units and 18.8% while Audi is down 4% to 183 sales and 14.5%, meaning the two brands add up to exactly 33.3% of the San Marino market, one in every 3 cars sold in the country! Notice also Seat up 4% and 4 spots to #6, Land Rover up 115% and 9 ranks to #8, Citroen up 14% to #11, Hyundai up 62%, Porsche up 18%, Volvo up 55% and Kia up 50%.

San Marino, also romantically called the Most Serene Republic of San Marino, is a 61 square kilometres enclave surrounded by Italy and is home to 30,000 inhabitants. Over the first 6 months of 2012, 748 new cars were registered in the country, down 3% year-on-year. Like in 2011 and over Q1 2012, Volkswagen is by far the most popular brand in San Marino, not Fiat even though it is technically right in the middle of Italy.

VW sells 152 units over the period for a fantastic 20.3% market share vs. 15.2% in 2011 and is followed by Audi at 101 sales and 13.5% (vs. #3 and 12.3% in 2011) and Fiat at 76 sales and 10.2% (vs. #2 and 12.6%). Suzuki ranks at an excellent 4th place with 6.3%, ahead of Opel at 4.5%. Notice Land Rover up to a brilliant 10th place with 2.8% share vs. #17 and 1.3% in 2011, possibly thanks to the Range Rover Evoque.

We continue on our series of tiny European countries! After Andorra and Liechtenstein, once again thanks to DC I am able to add San Marino to the list! San Marino is also (very) romantically called the Most Serene Republic of San Marino, is a 61 square kilometres enclave surrounded by Italy and is home to 30,000 inhabitants. In 2011, 1,545 cars were registered in San Marino, down 5% on 2010 and over the first 3 months of 2012 401 cars found a buyer.

Audi A4

Even though it is right in the middle of Italy, Fiat is not the best-selling brand in the country: Volkswagen dominates by far, in 2011 it held a 15.2% market share with 235 sales but over Q1 2012 its share shot up to 23.4% or roughly 1 car in 4 thanks to 94 units sold. #2 in 2011 with 12.6% share, Fiat is down to #3 this year at a meagre 9.2%, passed by Audi with 59 sales and 14.7% up from 12.3% in 2011. Excellent performance of Suzuki at #4 with 25 units and 6.2% followed by Opel, BMW, Toyota and Renault.
