Now that Gulf Cooperation Council data is available for August, I will share with you the highlights in each country in the region. You can find the Saudi Arabia update here and the UAE report here, for the remaining four countries and the Gulf region as a whole, see below for the complete analysis.

In Bahrain, new car sales slow down their growth to 8% year-on-year in August to 4,718 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 42,266 units, up 17% on 2013. The Toyota Prado outsells both the Land Cruiser and Hilux to jump into pole position with a fantastic 455 units and 9.6% share. Its deficit on the Land Cruiser year-to-date is now only 85 sales, meaning the Prado should dislodge the Land Cruiser from its YTD throne if it continues at the same rate. The Corolla (4.5%), Hiace (3.7%) and Yaris (3.3%) make the Top 6 100% Toyota this month in Bahrain, with the best-selling non-Toyota being the Nissan Patrol at #7 followed by the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage. The Lexus LX continues to deliver world-best performances here, ranking at an outstanding #10 with 2.4% share, with the Mitsubishi Lancer (#15) and BMW 7 Series (#25 vs. #59 year-to-date) also performing particularly well.

Lexus LX Gulf August 2014. Picture courtesy of motoringme.comThe Lexus LX is among the 10 best-sellers in Bahrain.

In Kuwait, the new car market is markedly less dynamic than other parts of the region, up ‘only’ 3% year-on-year in August to 12,188 registrations and 2% year-to-date to 100,964 units. Operating the exact reverse move than in the UAE and Bahrain, the Toyota Hilux takes a frank advantage over the Prado in Kuwait, selling a huge 1,308 units this month for a 10.7% market share vs. 7.6% year-to-date. 10.7% is exactly the market share of the Toyota Prado year-to-date here, however at just 7% in August it ranks 2nd while the Toyota Camry rounds up the podium in both rankings. The Corolla completes a Top 5 100% Toyota with the Nissan Patrol the most popular non-Toyota here too at #5, one spot below its YTD ranking. Noticeable good performers in Bahrain this month also include the Mitsubishi Lancer EX at #8 vs. #31 YTD, the Toyota Aurion at #15 vs. #27, the Hyundai Sonata at #18 vs. #33 and the Hyundai i10 at #41 vs. #154.

Toyota Land Cruiser Pickup Oman August 2014The Toyota Land Cruiser Pickup leads in Oman with 12.8% market share.

In Oman, new light vehicle sales have stalled: up 2% in August to 18,970 registrations but down 5 units (!) year-to-date to 145,954…  The Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up achieves the unbelievable feat of topping the Omani models sales charts with a huge 12.8% market share thanks to 2,419 sales. It still ranks 2nd year-to-date however at 10.3% below the Toyota Hilux at 11.3%. Here too the Top 5 is 100% Toyota with the Prado (#3), Land Cruiser (#4) and Hiace (#5) and the Nissan Patrol is the best-selling non-Toyota at #6. Notice the Toyota RAV4 up to #12 vs. #22 YTD, the Lexus LX at #13, Lexus ES back up to #24, Nissan X Terra up to #29, Nissan Juke up to #34 and the Geely EC7 at #53 after shining at #30 in July vs. #80 year-to-date.

Ford Figo Qatar August 2014. Picture courtesy of mouthshut.comThe Ford Figo is a new entrant in the Qatari Top 10

In Qatar, the market is up a very satisfying 23% in August to 7,770 registrations which brings the year-to-date total to 62,541 units, up 8% on 2013. Surpassed by the Toyota Hilux in the July models sales charts, the Toyota Land Cruiser reclaims its due title this month thanks to just one unit! It sells 482 examples over the month vs. 481 for the Hilux, but remains firmly in control year-to-date at 5,155 sales vs. 4,287. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the Top 4 models are 100% Toyota (add the Corolla and Prado) and in Qatar too the best-selling non-Toyota is the Nissan Patrol at #5 and 3.6% share. Great performances of the Nissan Navara up a huge 63 spots on July to #7 vs. #38 year-to-date, the Ford Figo taking off at #9 and 2.6% share vs. #52 YTD and the Chevrolet Tahoe up 12 ranks to #17.

The overall Gulf Cooperation Council region data and analysis will follow shortly.

New vehicle sales in Kuwait are up 9% year-on-year in 2013 to 153,800 registrations, and the best-seller in the country remains in pole position for the 2nd consecutive year: the Toyota Prado is up 16% to a record 15,914 sales and 10.3% share, the first time the Prado nameplate is above 10% over a Full Year in Kuwait. It is more than twice the score of the #2, the Toyota Hilux down 10% to 7,545 units and 4,9%. Reversely the Nissan D22 Pick-up is up a mammoth 81% and 4 spots to round up the podium with 5,810 sales and 3.8%, ahead of the Toyota Corolla (+56%!), Camry and Land Cruiser, both down 7%.

Chrysler 300C Kuwait 2013Chrysler 300C

After doubling its sales year-on-year in 2012, the Nissan Patrol lodges another outstanding performance in Kuwait, up 38% and 3 ranks to land at #7 with 3,437 units. With the Nissan Sunny N17 up 37% to #9 and the Mitsubishi Lancer up 56% to #10, the entire Top 10 best-sellers are 100% Japanese this year in Kuwait unlike in 2012 when the Chevrolet Tahoe led the American charge at #6. On the other hand the Chrysler 300C delivers the best progression in the Top 30, up a stratospheric 811% and 101 spots on 2012 to land at #12 with 2,259 units and 1.5%. Other notable gainers in Kuwait this year include the Lexus ES up 61% to #21, Hyundai Santa Fe up 148% to #27, Nissan Navara up 873% to #37 and the VW Passat up 344% to #59.

The Kuwaiti new car market is up 8% year-on-year in July to 12,234 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 86,852 units, up 9% on 2012. If the Toyota Prado unsurprisingly holds onto its traditional pole position thanks to 1,099 sales and 9% share (vs. 10.5% year-to-date), the big event this month is the 2nd place of the Mitsubishi Pajero, up 9 spots on June to 616 sales and 5% share which is more than double its year-to-date level of 2.2% (#8).

The Toyota Camry is also in great shape, up 3 spots to #3 while the Toyota Hilux is down 2 to #4. The other two great performers in the Top 10 are the Chevrolet Tahoe up 4 ranks to #6 with 304 sales and 2.5% and the Kia Optima up 5 to #9 at 218 units and 1.8%. New car sales in Kuwait are up 2% year-on-year in June to 10,788 registrations and up 8% year-to-date to 73,731 units. While it had improved from 5.1% in 2011 to 9.7% share over the Full Year 2012, the Toyota Prado continues to progress in Kuwait, passing the symbolic 10% share milestone to hold 10.9% of the market over the first 6 months of 2013 thanks to 8,027 sales and in spite of a month of June slightly weaker at 1,017 units and 9.4%. This score is over double the sales of any other model in Kuwait, with the Toyota Hilux ranking 2nd both in June at 4.2% share and year-to-date at 5% and the Nissan D22 pick-up rounding up the podium in both cases as well at 4.1% and 4.6% respectively.

Chrysler 300 Kuwait June 2013The Chrysler 300C is inside the Kuwaiti Top 5 this month!

Below the Toyota Corolla stable at 3.9% share, the Chrysler 300C delivers the performance of the month in Kuwait, up to a fantastic 5th position thanks to 342 sales and 3.2% and now #8 year-to-date at 2.6%. It even beats the Toyota Camry, down to #6 at 3%. The new car market in Kuwait is up a further 16% year-on-year in February to 12,602 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 25,167 units after two months, up 18% on 2012. Quite a lot of movement atop the models ranking this month in Kuwait. The Toyota Prado keeps its pole position by very far and manages to almost double its market share compared to January to reach a huge 15.8% thanks to 2,000 sales (which sounds like an estimate to me). The Nissan Patrol amazes its world by gaining 10 spots on last month to land in 2nd place at 609 units and 4.8%, ahead of the Toyota Hilux, Nissan D22 and Sunny. The other great performers this month are all American: the Chrysler 300C is up 26 ranks to #6, the Chevrolet Silverado up 21 to #15 and the Ford Edge up 60 to #22.
