Although part of China since 1997, Hong Kong car sales are reported by the HKMTA separately from the mainland Chinese market in which they are not included. In July, Hong Kong new car sales are down 8% year-on-year to 4.264 registrations, however the year-to-date total is still up a solid 10% on 2014 to 32.656 units. Over 1 in every 4 new vehicles registered in Hong Kong this month is a Toyota with 1.095 sales and 25.7%, far ahead of Mercedes (10.8%), Isuzu (9.4%) and Honda (8.3%) with BMW (#5) and Audi (#13) ranking much lower than they are so far in 2015 (#3 and #6 respectively). In the models ranking, the Toyota Hiace holds onto its traditional pole position by the skin of its teeth: with a tiny 10-unit advantage over the #2, the Toyota Alphard. The Honda Stepwagon, up a stunning 28 spots on June to #3, makes the Hong Kong podium 100% MPV this month.

New vehicle sales in Hong Kong are up 6% year-on-year in October to 4,625 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 44,298 deliveries, up 12% on 2013. Hong Kong is one of the territories in the world with the highest penetration of premium/luxury vehicles: with no less than one in 3 sales year-to-date (33.2%) being made in that segment, 45.5% when only counting private cars and removing commercial vehicles. And we have some very fine examples illustrating this trend this month: the most impressive being the Lexus NX breaking into the Top 10 for its 2nd month in market at #8 with 1.8% share, making Hong Kong the first territory in the world to welcome Lexus’s new SUV among its 10 most popular vehicles.

Lamborghini Huracan Hong Kong October 2014. Picture courtesy of motortrend.comThe Lamborghini Huracan is now among Hong Kong’s Top 100 best-sellers.

Notice also the Mercedes C-Class up 6 spots on September to #4 and 3.1% share, the Mercedes GLA shooting up 71 ranks to #14 making Hong Kong its 2nd highest ranking territory after Switzerland, the BMW i3 up 77 spots to #15, Porsche Macan up 5 to #26 and 1% share, the Maserati Ghibli ranking inside the Hong Kong Top 50 for the 5th time in the past 6 months at #39, the BMW X4 up 17 to #52 and, last but not least, the Lamborghini Huracan breaking into the Hong Kong Top 100 for its 2nd month of sales at #99 – needless to say the first territory in which it does so.

Non-premium highlights include the Toyota Hiace particularly strong at #1 with 8.6% share, the Toyota Noah taking off to 6.4% and shifting up to #2 YTD also, the Honda Odyssey reappearing in 5th place thanks to the new model and the Nissan X-Trail landing at #69.
