Hong Kong sales data has been a little disrupted this year with just 2.518 registrations in March (-54%) and 6.671 year-to-date (-55%) with manufacturers such as Audi and Volkswagen not reporting sales over the period. Toyota holds the fort both in March (40.2% share) and year-to-date (33.8%) with Mercedes (14.3%), BMW (11.7%), Porsche (6.2%) and Lexus (3.9%) in tow. The Porsche Macan holds 4.6% of the market so far this year but the lead more than ever belongs to the Toyota Hiace with 13.8% share including 20.7% in March. A dozen manufacturers have only reported overall sales and not model detail so far in 2016, but the situation should return to normal over the next few months.

Tesla Model S Hong Kong November 2015. Picture courtesy of motortrend.com P2Is the Tesla Model S one of the best-selling nameplates in Hong Kong?

Note Hong Kong data doesn’t include Tesla sales for now as the company doesn’t disclose commercial information for the territory. Yet as one of our readers Nick Naylor pointed out recently, a recent article in the South China Morning Post talks of roughly 2.000 Tesla Model S already having found a new home in Hong Kong. With the Model S having launched a little over a year ago in Hong Kong, this would place the brand within the Top 10 best-sellers on the territory in 2015, and the Model S among the five most popular nameplates – making Hong Kong Tesla’s most successful market in the world in terms of market share along with Norway – albeit unofficially.

New car sales in Hong Kong are still compiled by a separate organisation (HKMTA) even though it is now technically part of China and show new car sales up a meagre 0.6% year-on-year to 4.652 units, with the year-to-date total now standing at 46.330 registrations, up 5% on 2014. Below Toyota down a worrying 21% to 1.054 sales and 22.7% share, BMW is up a spectacular 72% on a year ago to 688 deliveries and 14.8%. This fantastic result is partly due to the exceptional success of the BMW 2 Series Tourer: thanks to 215 deliveries of the all-new Gran Tourer, the BMW nameplate simply takes the lead of the Hong Kong models ranking in October with 273 sales and 5.9% share, outselling the perennial leader the Toyota Hiace at 235 units and 5.1%.

Although part of China since 1997, Hong Kong car sales still follow an old pattern: they are reported by HKMTA separately from the mainland Chinese market in which they are not included. Toyota is more dominant than ever with 1.281 sales and 29.4% market share, distancing BMW (9.2%), Mercedes (8.4%), Isuzu (8.1%) and Honda (6%) while Porsche is up to #9 and Lexus remains #10.
