Leader last month, the VW Golf is down to a still excellent third position with 94 sales and 3.1%.

Mercedes E-Class

* See the Top 200 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Many thanks to Richard *

Although part of China, Hong Kong has a dedicated section on BSCB because its car market is radically different from the mainland – with absolutely no Chinese brands on sale in the territory for example… And for the very first time on BSCB thanks to Richard I can share with you a Top 160 models ranking for August 2012 and a Top 200 for 8 months 2012, that’s absolutely all models sold in Hong Kong!

Lexus RX

3,966 new vehicles were sold in Hong Kong in August, adding up to 27,671 year-to-date. Let’s start by quickly set up the car landscape in Hong Kong with a Top 5 manufacturers ranking: Toyota leads the charge with 14.9% share in August and 14.5% year-to-date, but BMW is not far at 13.2% followed by Mercedes at 12.1%. Note Mercedes is ahead of BMW year-to-date due to its LCV range. Lexus ranks #4 ytd with just under 6% above Audi at 5.6%.

BMW 5 Series

The Hong Kong models ranking is like no other in the world. It is the only territory to crown the Mercedes E-Class, #1 both in August with 167 sales and 4.2% share and year-to-date at 1,541 units and 5.6%. The Lexus RX is here too at its world best in 2nd position this month with 156 sales and 3.9% and #4 ytd at 4%. The BMW 5 Series rounds up the podium at 150 units and 3.8% but is #2 ytd with 1,249 sales and 4.5% share…

BMW 3 Series

In fact there are no less than 3 BMWs in the August Top 5! The 1 Series is up to #4 at 135 units and 3.4% and the 3 Series up to #5 with one less unit vs. #15 ytd… The Toyota Hiace and Hyundai H1 follow while the Honda Stepwagon has a fantastic month at #8 with 118 sales and 3% vs. #14 ytd. Notice also the Mercedes B-Class up to #14 and the Honda Jazz up to #18 vs. #45 ytd.

Ferrari 458. Picture by Raphael Belly, all rights reserved.

Outside the Top 20, two models make their first appearance in the Hong Kong ranking: the new gen VW Beetle lands directly at #22 with 46 sales while the Renault Fluence ranks #43 at 24 units. Notice also the VW Tiguan up to #21 vs. #33 ytd, the VW Scirocco up to #30 vs. #47, the Ford S-Max up to #34 vs. #84 and the BMW 6 Series up to #51 vs. #95.

McLaren MP4-12C. Picture by Tom Wolf, all rights reserved.

Two recent Toyota launches are met with full success: the all-new Toyota Auris is already #19 wit 56 sales and 1.4% while the Toyota 86 ranks #52 at 18 units. Only in Hong Kong: the Ferrari 458 is #58 with 15 sales and the McLaren MP4-12C at an astounding 74th place with 12 units sold this month and 40 year-to-date!
