After three years of extravagant growth (+43% in 2014+55% in 2015 and +24% in 2016), the Vietnamese new vehicle market comes to a halt in 2017 with sales down 10.4% to 272.750 units, still the second largest annual result in history. Thaco-Kia remains the most popular manufacturer in the country thanks to its commercial vehicles but falls heavily at -21% to 23.2% share vs. 26.3% in 2016. Toyota on the other hand goes against the grain with a 4% improvement to 21.8% share vs. 18.7% a year ago, and ranked #1 in January, June, November and December. Ford limits its decline to 1% and sees its share gain one percentage point to 10.5%, overtaking Mazda (-19%) for third place overall. Honda (+5%), Chevrolet (+9%), Hyundai (+4%) and Isuzu (-1%) camp on their positions and all gain share. Mercedes surges 20% to #9, Mitsubishi is up 9% and Hino up 24%.

Model-wise, the Toyota Vios soars 26% to its 4th year in a row at #1, tightening its stranglehold on the market with an outstanding 8.2% share (its highest ever), becoming the first ever nameplate to sell over 20.000 units in a single year in Vietnam. The Ford Ranger is up 6% and one spot to #2 while the Toyota Fortuner is up 12% and two to #3 just as the Toyota Innova (+6%). Reversely, the Mazda3 (-14%) drops one rank to #5 and the Kia Morning (-31%) loses four to #6. The Honda City (+20%) is the other nameplate to post a double-digit gain in the Top 10. Further down, the Chevrolet Colorado (+226%), Ford Everest/Explorer (+222%) and Mitsubishi Triton (+55%) make themselves noticed.
