Kuwait August 2017: Mitsubishi Pajero leaps to #1, market back up 10%

New car sales in Kuwait are on the mend in August: up 10% year-on-year to 9.386 registrations, with the year-to-date tally now down just 6% at 66.847 units. Market leader Toyota grows slower at +4% but achieves a very high share at 34.2% vs. 27.9% (-18%) so far in 2017. The hero of the month is without contest Mitsubishi, up 149% year-on-year in August to an outstanding 20.1% market share vs. 11% year-to-date, leaping to the 2nd spot YTD also. This performance is in great part due to the Pajero, up 174% for the month to take the leadership of the Kuwaiti models ranking with 13.2% share, but also the Lancer EX up 204% to #5 and the Mirage up 20-fold to #13. Kia (+2%) is propelled to third place overall, outpacing Chevrolet (-10%) and Nissan (-27%). GMC surges 80% to 6th place, Honda is up 26% and Ford up 5-fold at #10. Further down notice Dodge up 34%. Volkswagen up 35%, Jeep up 48%, Isuzu up 114% and Cadillac up 151%.

Model-wise, below the Pajero the Toyota Prado is stable but significantly down in terms of market share at 7.6% vs. 8.9% year-to-date, where it remains by far in the lead even though the Pajero jumps to #2 YTD solely thanks to its August performance. The Toyota Land Cruiser impresses and almost doubles its sales at +92%, whereas the Corolla (-10%), Camry (-18%) and Hilux (-42%) struggle. The Toyota Coaster is up 193% to #8 and the Chevrolet Tahoe up 26% to #9. Notice also the Toyota RAV4 up 117% to #14, the Nissan Patrol up 83% to #15 and the GMC Yukon XL up 36-fold (!) on its August 2016 score to #17. The Nissan Kicks isn the most popular recent launch (<12 months) but barely manages a Top 50 ranking at #46.
