New car sales in Romania sign a third consecutive year of double-digit growth in 2016 at +17% to 94.919 units, when 2015 was at +16% and 2014 at +22%. This is the Romanian market’s highest annual result this decade, since the 147.962 sales recorded in 2009 but still very far from its all-time high of 343,080 registrations reached in 2008. Homegrown market leader Dacia fails to match the market’s pace at +3% to see its market share fall below 30% at 29.1%. This is still more than 3 times the amount of the #2, Skoda, also seeing its share thaw slightly to 9.1% with sales up 15%. Volkswagen follows the market at +16% to remain #3 while Renault surges 41% and overtakes Ford (+19%) for 4th place. Opel does even better (+54%) but stays 6th, ahead of Mercedes (+35%), Hyundai (+22%), Toyota (+8%) and BMW (+40%). Other great gainers include Kia (+28%), Audi (+32%), Honda (+33%), Subaru (+40%), Mazda (+43%), Suzuki (+76%), Peugeot (+78%), Lexus (+132%) and Jaguar (+145%). Reversely, Mitsubishi (-29%) and Fiat (-42%) tumble down.

Mercedes GLE Romania 2016The Mercedes GLE ranks at a stunning 23rd place in Romania in 2016.

Over in the models aisle, the Dacia Logan easily celebrates 12 consecutive years on top despite trailing the market at +4% to 17.8% share vs. 20% in 2015. This is the Logan’s 2nd lowest annual share at home above the 16.9% hit in 2012. Hopefully, its late-year facelift will help in 2017. The Top 5 best-sellers are unchanged compared to last year, with the Dacia Duster (-8%), Skoda Octavia (+9%), Dacia Sandero (+13%) and Skoda Rapid (+21%) in tow. Below, the Renault Clio is up 43% to #6, the Opel Astra gains 146% and 11 spots to #7, the VW Jetta is up 42% to #11 and the Suzuki Vitara up 134% to #12. Other impressive performers include the Renault Kadjar (+255%) and Mercedes GLE (+213%) both inside the Romanian Top 25 for their first full year of sales, as well as the Peugeot 208 (+139%), 308 (+116%), Hyundai Tucson (+223%), Honda Civic (+68%), Mercedes GLC (+337%), Mazda CX-3 (+279%) and Audi A4 (+146%).
