Romania Full Year 2012: Dacia Logan #1 for 8th year in a row

The 2nd generation Dacia Logan should help it increase its market share in 2013…

The fall continues for the Romanian new car market: after hitting an all-time high of 343,080 registrations in 2008, it has been down ever since: -55% in 2009, -19% in 2010, -14% in 2011 and -19% in 2012 to 66,436 registrations, the weakest annual total in the country in potentially 20 years… No surprise in pole position: the Dacia Logan lodges its 8th year in a row in the lead and celebrated its 100th consecutive month atop the Romanian models ranking in December, meaning no interruption since its launch in September 2004. However with sales down 35% on 2011 to just 11,255 and 16.9% share, it delivers by far its weakest annual volume and market share, with its best scores remaining 96,037 units in 2006 and 41% share in 2005

8 of the Top 10 best-selling models in Romania this year lose ground compared to 2011: the Skoda Octavia is #2 at -25%, followed by the Dacia Duster at -20% (but hitting its highest ever market share in the country in March at 10%), VW Golf at -24% and Ford Focus at -12%. The Ford Fiesta excels at #6, up 9 spots and 32% year-on-year, with the VW Jetta up 8 ranks and 5% to #8. Other great performers include the Suzuki SX4 up 61% to #14, VW Tiguan up 42% to #15, Hyundai Elantra up to #27, Kia Sportage up 53% to #29, Mercedes ML-Class up 45% to #31 and the Range Rover Evoque up to #41. Two all-new models appear in the Top 50: the Dacia Lodgy at #37 and VW Up! at #39.

The source we use it’s the same only that I use the last page of the statistic called ‘tip; extensie’ and by counting them separatly I can tell how many Sedans or MCV were registered.
If you look at Dacia you will notice that some of them start with SD and then continue with B (those are Sandero), some with K (those are MCV), some with H (Duster), J (Logdy) and finally L for Dacia Logan Sedan. Figures will not always coincide, they are not very accurate, but the rule always works al least to make a difference between MCV and Sedan.
It is true that in Romania MCV are mainly used in commercial purpose, but in its VAN version, but, unfortunatly, old Pick-ups still exist on the market and are intensivly used.
    I don’t know the statistics for France….
Hope the informations will help, best wishes! Everybody here says ‘hy’ :)

Actually, it’s not really 100 in a row :) … only if you consider registrations for both MCV an Sedan versions of Dacia Logan. If taken separatly, which is how I do at work (considering that MCV is a Light Utility Vehicle meanwhile the Sedan version is a Personal Vehicle), in March 2012 Duster was the best sold model. Anyway, it’s a very nice comment and I will quote you. Logan is indeed a real succes in Romania ever since its launch.

Wow thanks so much for this info Madalina – love it!
Am I wrong in assuming that a significant part of MCV sales still go to private buyers? In France where I used to live almost all private sales are actually MCV versions not the sedan?
Do you have access to a Logan versions split for Romania each month?
      Thanks again,
      Matt
