South Korea August 2014: Hyundai Avante #1, Kia Sorento up

The new generation Kia Sorento enables the nameplate to break back into the Top 20 at home.

Sales of local models are down 5% year-on-year in South Korea in August to 105,983 units, bringing the year-to-date total to 940,645 units, up 3% on 2014. The Hyundai Avante (aka Elantra) manages to top the models ranking for the first time since September 2013, reclaiming the top spot it held over the Full Year 2013 with 8,194 sales and 7.7%. It however still ranks 5th year-to-date with 6% share. The Hyundai Sonata is kicked down to 2nd place but remains in the lead so far in 2014 with 72,127 sales and 7.7%. We welcome back the Kia Morning (aka Picanto) onto the South Korean podium this month while the Kia Carnival is already down 5 ranks on July to #7 at 4.6% share, still way better than its year-to-date level (#15 and 2.7%). It seems the honeymoon period of the new generation is already over though… Further down, notice the Kia Sorento boosted back inside the Top 20 by the new generation at #18.
