For the very first time on BSCB I can share with you a complete models and brands ranking for South Korea, including imports! Exciting times indeed. In June there we 17,803 new imported cars registered in South Korea, bringing the overall total to 139,024 units. This 12.8% import market share is one of the lowest in the world, but it has grown exponentially over the past few years: it was was only 0.4% in 2000! Automotive News predicts imports could account for as much as 20% of the South Korean market by 2016…
Brand-wise, below Hyundai (43.1%), Kia (25.5%), Daewoo/Chevrolet (8.7%), Renault Samsung (6.1%) and SsangYong (3.7%), BMW is the most popular foreign brand in June with 3,358 sales and 2.4% share ahead of Volkswagen (2.2%), Mercedes (2.1%) and Audi (2%). Year-to-date, BMW is up 21% on 2013, Mercedes up 43% and Audi up 44% while Infiniti is up 214%, Volvo up 40%, Land Rover up 39%, Porsche up 21% and Jaguar up 20%. Interestingly, this month Lexus sells more than Toyota (590 units vs. 554) to become the best-selling Japanese brand in South Korea even though it only holds a 0.4% market share – underlining the tensions between the two countries.
In the models ranking, there are only 3 foreigners inside the June Top 30! The BMW 5 Series leads the way at #25 with 1,478 sales and 1.1% share ahead of the Mercedes E-Class at #27 and 1,419 units and the Audi A6 at #30 and 1,149 sales. These are the only 3 foreign models to sell more than 1,000 units in South Korea this month! Foreigners fare a little better below with a total of 12 representants inside the Top 50. Additions to the list include the VW Tiguan at #39, VW Golf at #40, BMW 3 Series at #41, VW Jetta at #42, Lexus ES at #46 and Infiniti Q50 at #50.
