That’s it: the change in car tax in place since January 1 finally has a deadly toll on new car sales in Argentina, crashing down 35% year-on-year in April to 52,901 registrations and taking the year-to-date total with it: now down 19% to 270,308 units. The VW Gol Trend manages to top the Argentinean sales charts for the 2nd month running and the 5th time in the last 9 months with 2,644 sales and 5% share, cementing its year-to-date leadership at 11,024 units and 4.1% vs. 9,647 for the Toyota Hilux (#2) and 9,411 for the Ford Ecosport (#3). The Ford Fiesta Kinetic lodges another stellar month in 2nd place with 2,340 sales and 4.4% while the Chevrolet Classic returns to the podium for the first time since last October after leading annual sales in 2013. Notice also the Toyota Etios down 4 spots on March to a still very impressive 6th place, the Ford Focus III up 5 to #7 and the Fiat Palio up 7 to #9.
