New car sales in South Africa are up 4% year-on-year to 650,620 registrations. We have a new leader in the models ranking this year, with the Toyota Hilux taking the lead thanks to sales down ‘just’ 9% to 37,495 sales and 5.8%. The VW Polo Vivo is dethroned, down 15% to 35,041 units and 5.4% while the VW Polo rounds up the podium like in 2012 with 27,953 sales and 4.3%, down 13% on 2012. But the big event this year in South Africa is the undeniable success of the Toyota Etios, up 4 spots and 33% year-on-year to land in 4th place with 24,367 units and 3.7% share, peaking at #2 in November, thus making South Africa pretty much the only country in the world where the Etios is actually successful.
