After kicking goals for most of 2013, new light vehicle sales in the US finish the year up only 0.3% in December to 1,360,302 registrations, meaning the final 2013 total is up 7.6% on 2012 to 15.6 million. In pole position, the Ford F-Series sells 74,592 units, its best score in over 7 years – since August 2006 when it sold 76,804 units, while the BMW 3 Series (including sales of the 4 Series) breaks into the monthly Top 20 for the first time at #18 with 16,737 which are to my knowledge the nameplate’s all-time high ranking and monthly volumes, with previous bests in my records being #21 in April 2007 and 13,930 units in May 2007…
The third star of the month in the US is the Jeep Cherokee: it is up 48% and 12 spots on November to reach #23 and 15,038 sales for only its second full month in market! The Cherokee is already Jeep’s 2nd best-seller this month, only 1,479 units off the Grand Cherokee… In other news, the Ram Pick-up is up to #3, making the podium 100% pick-up trucks for the 2nd time in 3 months and only the third time in 8 years (since February 2006), the Honda Accord passes the Toyota Camry to become the best-selling passenger car in the country for the first time since last April, the Ford Escape is up 21% on December 2012 to #9, the Ford Fusion up 27% to #10, Toyota RAV4 up 46% to #13, Subaru Forester up 51% to #26, Lexus RX up 13 spots on last month to #27 vs. #48 over the Full Year and the Dodge Charger up 15 to #40.
The first 6 Cadillac ELR were registered in the US this month.
Beyond the Top 50, there are some interesting movements from launches/relaunches: the Lexus IS is up 117% on December 2012 and 19 spots on last month to #74, the Infiniti Q50 is down 23 ranks to #87, the Mercedes CLA down 7 to #104, Chevrolet Corvette up to #112 vs. #159 over the full year, Ram ProMaster up 38 to #146, Fiat 500L up 19 to #163, Mitsubishi Mirage up 11 to #164 and the Chevrolet SS up 34% on November to #231 with 239 sales. Finally, we welcome the Cadillac ELR in the US ranking this month with its first 6 units registered (#252)
