Back to square one. After gaining ground year-on-year for 3 of the last 4 months, the Greek new car market falls flat once again in August: down to a minuscule 3,373 registrations, that’s 13% below August 2012 which was already down 47% on the previous year… Year-to-date, the market stands at 40,199 units, down 4.5% on 2012 and on track to deliver the weakest annual sales figure in 26 years (since the 50,501 registrations of 1987) and the 2nd weakest in 32 years (46,860 in 1981). Down to #3 in July, the Toyota Yaris reclaims the Greek pole position for the 4th time so far in 2013 and the 7th time in the last 12 months thanks to 257 sales and 7.6% share, above its 2013 level of 6.5%.
The VW Golf is the largest model in the Greek Top 10 this month.
The Opel Corsa is down to #2 at 217 units and 6.4% ahead of the Hyundai i20 lodging another impressive score at #3 with 159 sales and 4.7%. The economic crisis has had a striking downsizing effect on the Greek new car market: this month the VW Golf is the largest model and only compact car inside the Top 10 at #4! Other good performers include the Citroen C3 up 4 ranks to #5, Suzuki Swift up 17 to #8, Renault Clio up 15 to #9, Skoda Octavia up 18 to #13, Audi A3 up 12 to #14, Ford Focus up 13 to #15, BMW 1 Series up 20 to #17, the Skoda Rapid up 9 to break into the Greek Top 20 for the first time at #18, Fiat 500 up 10 to #19 and the Dacia Duster up 20 to #20.
