Potentially the result of the social unrest that has characterised the country in the last couple of months, the Brazilian new car market falls deeper into recession in August, down a dramatic 23% on August 2012 (which was, granted, the strongest sales figure in history) to 312,722 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total into negative as well at 2,344,436 units, down 2% on 2012. Below the VW Gol #1 again with 22,621 sales and 7.2%, the Fiat Palio manages to rank above its lil sis the Uno for the 2nd month running but only the 4th time in the last 3 years after December 2012, February and July 2013, thanks to 15,168 units and 4.9%. The Ford Fiesta lodges another extremely solid month at #4 with 13,541 sales and 4.3%, only 538 units away from the podium and the Fiat Uno!
Outstanding month for the Fiat Siena, up 3 spots on July to #5 at 12,687 units and 4.1%, the nameplate’s highest market share in over 3 years (since July 2010) and its third best monthly volume ever behind March 2010 (12,913) and September 2009 (12,700). The Chevrolet Onix is back inside the Top 10, up 3 ranks to #8 with 10,327 sales and 3.3%, beating its archenemy the Hyundai HB20 (#11) for the third time in the last 4 months. Plus its sedan version, the Chevrolet Prisma, continues to progress, up 2 to #14 at 6,751 units and 2.2% vs. 4,057 and 1.3% for the HB20S, also up 2 to #21. Even though the new generation has still not arrived, the Renault Sandero is up to #9 and back inside the year-to-date Top 10 at #10 with 63,197 sales and 2.7%.
