San Marino, also romantically called the Most Serene Republic of San Marino, is a 61 square kilometres enclave surrounded by Italy which is home to 30,000 inhabitants. The San Marino new car market is behaving very similarly to the Italian one: down 18% year-on-year in 2012 to 1,264 registrations. Even though it is technically part of Italy, Fiat is not the favourite carmaker here and far from it: the Italian brands falls by 29% in 2012 and is down to #3 with 138 sales and 10.9%.
The VAG Group reigns supreme: Volkswagen is up 1% to 238 units and 18.8% while Audi is down 4% to 183 sales and 14.5%, meaning the two brands add up to exactly 33.3% of the San Marino market, one in every 3 cars sold in the country! Notice also Seat up 4% and 4 spots to #6, Land Rover up 115% and 9 ranks to #8, Citroen up 14% to #11, Hyundai up 62%, Porsche up 18%, Volvo up 55% and Kia up 50%.
