Extremely robust month for new car sales in India, up a massive 32% year-on-year in October to 231,543 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 2,224,610 units, up 11% on 2011. After a couple of eventful months, the entire Top 5 most popular models are back to normal in October and identical to the 2012 year-to-date ranking.  The Maruti Alto is #1 with 26,600 sales, its highest volume since last March, followed by the Maruti Swift at 15,433 units (best since last June), the Maruti Dzire at 14,389 (best since last May), the Maruti Wagon R at 13,608 and the Mahindra Bolero at 11,071 units – its highest ever monthly volume.

It’s below that the ranking gets more animated. The Hyundai i20 is up 2 spots on September to a shiny 6th place, the Maruti Ertiga gains one further rank to #9 with 7,289 sales and 3.1% which are ranking and volume records for the model. The Renault Duster continues its seemingly unstoppable progression, up 5 spots on last month to a best-ever 15th place at a record 5,406 units and 2.3% share. That’s 80% of Renault sales in India in October…

Chevrolet Sail

The Mahindra XUV500 catches its breath this month, down 2 ranks to a still very respectable #19 while the Tata Nano is down to #21 and 4,004 sales, its lowest ranking since September 2011. The Mahindra Quanto is up 5 spots to #28 at 2,497 units for its 2nd month of sales in the country, the Renault Scala is up one to #43 and we welcome the Mahindra Thar in the ranking #45 with 686 sales, even though it is not a new model. The other newcomers are the Chevrolet Sail at #51 and 423 units and the Nissan Evalia at 195 sales.

    Very good prospects for the coming months. Now, is that Renault has the capacity to increase the production volume of its Duster … need to think about 1000 people who have already pre-ordering in England!
