Indian car sales are going from strength to strength, up a whopping 20% year-on-year in March to 281,831 registrations, the biggest month of all time in India! the 2012 year-to-date total stands at 784,622 units, up 14% on 2011 and making India the fourth biggest market in the world behind China, the USA and Japan but just above Brazil and Germany! The Maruti Alto delivers its second biggest month behind March 2011 with 35,245 sales and is already above 100,000 units after just 3 months at 101,119 exactly…

Hyundai Eon

No less than 12 models beat their monthly record this month! The Maruti Swift is close at 20,521 units but the Dzire confirms its exceptional success with a best-ever 16,451 sales, improving on last month’s record of 15,068. Behind a Maruti Wagon R still solid at 14,589 units, the Hyundai Eon is also at its highest with 12,500 sales.

Tata Nano

A very important month for Tata: the ‘disappointing’ Nano delivers its best month ever at 10,475 sales and only its second month ever above 10,000 units after April 2011… As for the Mahindra Bolero, it breaks the 10,000 monthly units barrier for the very first time at #9 with 10,078 sales.

Honda Brio

Now that Thai parts supply are back to normal, the Honda Brio literally takes off: up 211% on February to 6,355 units, simply the highest ever monthly result delivered by a Honda in India! Other record breakers this month are the Chevrolet Beat with 5,621 sales, Nissan Sunny at 4,151, VW Polo at 3,940, Tata Sumo at 3,631, Mahindra XUV500 at 3,196 and Skoda Rapid at 2,882.

Maruti Ertiga

Last but not least, the all-new Maruti Ertiga saw its first 1,117 units registered this month, putting it directly in 41st position.

Hi Matt, You have mentioned here that for the first three months of 2012, India has become the third largest passenger vehicle market in the world. However, looking at the figures for Japan, it does not appear to be so. Also the figures for Brazil and Germany have not been released yet. So how have you come to that conclusion? Please clarify. Thanks.

Hi Rover, thanks for the pick-up!
I have corrected this post with India in 4th place overall behind Japan but still above Germany (source kba.de) and Brazil (source Fenavabre).
      cheers
      Matt
