New car sales in Australia continue to shine, up 7% year-on-year in July to 86,641 registrations, which brings the year-to-date total to 635,495 units, up 10% on 2011 and still on course to break the country’s all-time record for full year sales. After the Mazda3 put an end to 15 years of domination of the Holden Commodore last year, we may already be witnessing another change of guard in the Australian car market in 2012: the Toyota Hilux ranks #1 for the 4th consecutive month in July, the first time it does so ever, with 4,163 sales and 4.8% share while the Mazda3 is #2 at 3,355 units and 3.9%.
This is the Hilux’s highest market share in Australia since the 4.9% it reached in December 2009 and means it is now only 1,593 sales below the Mazda3 in the year-to-date ranking at 23,575 units vs. 25,168. At this rate, the Hilux should easily overtake the Mazda before the end of the year. Note the Hilux is only the fourth model to manage to hold the monthly pole position for 4 consecutive times in the last 30 years in Australia with the Holden Commodore, Ford Falcon and Toyota Corolla, which stays very solid in third place this month with 2,985 sales and 3.4%.
If in June the Holden Commodore was down to a worst-ever 8th place, it is back up to #4 this month with 2,399 sales and 2.8%, well above its production line companion the Holden Cruze down to #7 and 2.2%. The Nissan Navara equals the highest Australian ranking ever it reached last month at #5 with 2,164 units and 2.5%, the Ford Ranger breaks into the Top 10 for the first time since June 2011 at #9 with 1,688 sales and 1.9% and the Mazda CX-5 is the best-selling SUV in the country again, up one spot to #11 with 1,483 units and 1.7%.
Notice also the Hyundai i20 up to a best-ever 13th place with 1,382 sales and 1.6%, the Nissan Dualis also up to a record 16th position at 1,183 units and 1.4% and the Ford Falcon down to #27 with 941 sales and 1.1%, only 10 units above its worst monthly figure ever, hit last January.
