Italian consumers are among the last in the world with the Swedish and Slovaks to still be extremely keen of Station Wagons (SW), which is why I keep separating this format each month in Italy. However like in April, this month it is not entirely true. In an overall market down 14% year-on-year, SW sales are down 20% to 12,406 registrations, bringing the SW market share in Italy to 8.4%, down from 9% a year ago.

After a two month-reign by the Opel Astra, the Ford Focus reclaims the pole position in the SW Italian ranking this month with 1,417 sales vs. 1,308 for the Astra. For the first time ever the Peugeot 508 climbs onto the podium thanks to 1,124 units sold for a huge 83% SW ratio, meaning 8 out of 10 Peugeot 508 sold in Italy this month were station wagons…

However this is the not the highest ratio in the ranking, with the Audi A4, #4 at 1,025 units, and the VW Passat, #5 with 1,007 sales, both reaching a best-ever 90% SW ratio. Granted, the Volvo V50 is at 100% but that’s because there is no sedan version of the model. Notice also the Renault Megane up 4 spots to #6.
