Renault Tondar 90

* See the Top 15 most produced models by clicking on the title! *

119,230 passenger cars were produced in Iran in Dey 1390, roughly equivalent to January 2012 (21 December 2011 to 20 January 2012) in the Persian calendar. That’s a 10% drop year-on-year. The entire Top 9 is unchanged vs. last month, a pretty stable production ranking indeed. The Saipa Pride is still by far the most popular model in the country with no less than 49,220 units produced this month, albeit a 19% fall year-on-year. Follow the Peugeot 206 at 17,918 units (+13%) and Peugeot 405 at 16,233 (-6%). Note the 206 and 405 positions are reversed in the year-to-date ranking, Dey being the 10th month of the persian year 1390.

Saipa Tiba

The Iran Khodro Samand is in difficulty this month at 11,339 units, down 19% year-on-year. It’s quite the opposite for the Renault Tondar 90 (aka Dacia Logan), exactly doubling its production in a year: from 4,287 units to 8,584 this month. Its year-to-date total is up 95% at 75,244 units, staying ahead of the Peugeot Pars at 74,379 (+1%). The other model to see its sales take off is the Saipa Tiba with 3,533 units produced this month (its strongest month so far), a 484% increase year-on-year.

February 18th, 2012 28 comments

Audi A6

* NOW UPDATED with the Top 300 best-selling models! Click on title to see. Thanks Austin *

Car sales in Germany are stable year-on-year in January at 210,195 registrations. The VW Golf/Plus/Jetta continues to dominate, reaching its best market share since last September at 8.9% thanks to 18,764 sales. The podium is 100% VW and identical to the Full Year 2011 ranking with the Passat at #2 and Polo at #3, both grabbing 3.1% share. The Mercedes C Class is up 2 spots on December to #4 with 5,485 units.

VW Tiguan

Exceptional performance of the Audi A6/A7 this month: with 4,537 sales and 2.2% it reaches a record 5th position, its highest ever monthly ranking in Germany since the launch of the A6 nameplate in 1994. Its previous best was #6 in July 2005 when it sold 6,646 units for a 2.5% market share. Note the A7 had not launched in 2005 but this month the split A6/A7 is 3,998/539, meaning the A6 alone would rank #6 and still equal its best ever ranking.

Another model reaches its highest ever German monthly ranking in January: the VW Tiguan ranks #7 with 3,912 sales and 1.9% share, it’s the second time the Tiguan reaches that position after February 2011 and only the third time since the launch of the Tiguan nameplate in 2007 that the model breaks into the monthly Top 10.

Mercedes B Class

We are starting to see the effects of the 2nd generation Mercedes B Class spreading across the country, with the model up a whopping 14 spots on December to break into the Top 10 for the first time since last March at #10 and 3,482 sales. Other great performers this month include the Opel Zafira up 12 ranks to #21, the VW Up! holding itself to a promising #23 with 2,153 units and 1%, Hyundai ix35 up to #41 and Audi Q3 breaking into the Top 50 for the first time at #44.

Mazda CX-5

Further down the ranking, notice the Mercedes ML Class at #54, Kia Rio at #64, BMW 7 Series at #91, Range Rover Evoque at #119 with 386 sales and 0.3%, VW Beetle at #123 and 359 units, Citroen DS5 at #153 with 217 sales and Opel Ampera at #193 and 110 units. Two models have their very first month of sales in Germany this month: the Subaru XV delivers 26 units (#248) and the Mazda CX-5 has its first 7 sales (#279).

Australia January 2012: Holden Commodore not Holden’s best-seller for the first time since 1978, passed by Holden Cruze

February 18th, 2012 10 comments

Holden Cruze

* NOW UPDATED with the Top 50 best-selling models: click on the title to see! *

New car sales in Australia are up an encouraging 4% in January at 76,783 registrations. A few big benchmarks are passed this month. First, the Mazda3 confirms its title of Australia’s best-selling car acquired in 2011 when it put an end to 15 years of Holden Commodore domination by reaching its best-ever monthly market share this month at an outstanding 5.3% thanks to 4,045 sales. It is the third time in 8 months the 3 leads the Australian monthly ranking after June and August 2011, and the fourth time ever with January 2009. The 3 also hits the highest market share by any model in Australia since the 5.5% of the Toyota Corolla in January 2011.

Mazda3

The second benchmark, and it’s a massive one, is the Holden Cruze passing the Commodore for the first time in history to become the brand’s best-seller at #3 overall with 2,445 units and 3.2% share thanks to the addition of the new hatchback version also produced in Adelaide. It is the first time since its launch in 1978 that the Holden Commodore is not Holden’s top seller. In January it falls to just 2,170 units and 2.8% share, its lowest ever monthly volume and market share.

Ford Falcon

Finally the Ford Falcon, once the Commodore’s archenemy, suffers from large cars going out of fashion in the country and the effect of a freak hailstorm in Melbourne that damaged 500 vehicles in December to hit its lowest monthly volume ever recorded since the launch of the Falcon nameplate in 1961, falling below 1,000 units for the first time at 931 sales and 1.2% share.

Notice also the fantastic 6th place of the Mazda2, leading its category with 1,624 units and 2.1%. This is the 2’s highest monthly ranking ever, beating the 7th place it reached last August. The Ford Focus is up to a brilliant 8th position, the Holden Barina up to #11, Mazda CX-7 up to #14 and the Toyota Hilux is down to #17, penalised with supply issues from Thailand. Great Wall is up 68% on January 2011 at 868 sales.

Skoda Octavia

* See the Top 10 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

Slow start of 2012 for the European market, down 7% year-on-year in January to 1,003,814 registrations. The podium is unchanged vs. December and the Full Year 2011 ranking with the VW Golf in the lead at 3.6% share ahead of the VW Polo at 2.6% and the Ford Fiesta at 2.4%. The Ford Focus reaches its best position since last August at #4 with 22,316 sales and 2.2% share, up 7% on January 2011.

Nissan Qashqai

The VW Passat is also up year-on-year at +15% thanks to 17,694 units sold at #7 but this month’s best performances are found at the bottom of the Top 10: the Nissan Qashqai breaks into the Top 10 for only the third time ever after July 2010 and September 2011 and reaches its highest ever European ranking at #9 with 16,881 sales. The Skoda Octavia for its part appears in the European Top 10 for the very first time at #10 with 16,565 units, up 22% year-on-year.
