The Portuguese car market is in free-fall again this month at 6,949 registrations, down 47% on January 2011 and the worst January since 1988. For the first time since last August the VW Golf is the best-selling model in the country with 308 sales and 4.4% sales (-42%) ahead of 2011’s best-seller the Renault Megane at 283 units and 4.1%, down a worrying 63% year-on-year.

Mercedes B-Class

The Fiat Punto Evo rounds up the podium with 215 sales, up from #10 in 2011, while the Peugeot 308 is up to a brilliant 5th place thanks to 189 units sold (-36%) and the Ford Focus is #7 at +1% year-on-year. Other great performers this month include the Smart Fortwo up to #10, the VW Passat up to #11 and the BMW 5 Series up to #12 albeit at -48% year-on-year.

BMW 1 Series

Two recent facelifts shine in January in Portugal: the Mercedes B-Class is up to an excellent 17th position with 109 sales and 1.6% share, up an amazing 627% year-on-year, and the BMW 1 Series new generation is up to #20 at 92 units and 1.3%.

There is now a Top 318 All-models ranking available! Click here to see

You can see my original Europe Full Year 2011 Top 10 post here.

Thanks to Tuga I can now share with you a Top 40 models ranking for the entire European market. Unlike my last Full Year 2011 update which was based on JATO figures, this ranking was sourced on Autonews and include more countries, which means the top of the ranking is actually quite different from the one I published last month.

If the VW Golf stays leader by far with 493,855 sales (-2%), the VW Polo drops to #3 behind the Ford Fiesta at 371,454 units vs. 372,977. The Opel Corsa is still #4, but is now followed by the Opel Astra, Ford Focus and Renault Clio. The Renault Megane is above the Peugeot 207 and the VW Passat is still the big winner at #10, up 10 spots and 43% on 2010.

Mercedes C-Class

But where it gets fascinating is below the Top 10 as these figures are very rare to come across… Down 17% on last year the Fiat Punto loses its spot in the Top 10 to #11, followed closely by the Nissan Qashqai at #12 with 216,970 sales. The Skoda Octavia is up 2 spots to #14, the Mercedes C-Class up 17% and 9 ranks to #16, passing its archenemy the BMW 3 Series, while the Skoda Fabia and Seat Ibiza are both up 5 spots to #18 and #19 respectively.

BMW 5 Series

Outside the Top 20, great performers include the BMW 5 Series up 30% and 12 ranks to #24, the Dacia Duster landing directly at #26 with 141,961 units, the Opel Meriva up 22% and 8 spots to #32, the Ford C-Max up to #33, VW Touran up 12 ranks to #34, Citroen C4 and Nissan Juke up to #38 and #39.

Hyundai i10

* See the Top 5 best-selling models and Top 10 brands by clicking on the title! *

Thanks to Lorenzo I am now able to share with you a monthly update on the car market in the Mauritius island. Faithful to its 2011 pole position, the Chevrolet Cruze leads the models ranking with 43 sales and 8.3% market share but this month the Hyundai i10 is up to a brilliant second place at 36 units and 6.9% share, up from 3.8% in 2011 and relegating the Mercedes C-Class to #3 with 26 sales and 5%.

Absent from the Top 5 in 2011, the Kia Rio and Nissan Micra are up to 4th and 5th position respectively with 4.6% and 3.8% share. The i10’s success enables Hyundai to take the lead of the brands ranking this month in Mauritius with an excellent 72 sales and 13.4% share, up from 10.4% in 2011. Nissan, leader last year, is down to #2 followed by Kia.

* See the Top 75 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Thanks to Ldman *

12,234 new vehicles were registered in Egypt this month, down 18% on January 2011 which was the start of the revolution in the country. The Hyundai Verna, 2011’s best-seller, keeps the lead with 929 sales and 7.6% share, above 2011’s #2 the Chevrolet TFR (aka Isuzu D-Max) at 821 units and 6.7%. The new gen Hyundai Elantra rounds up the podium with 759 sales and 6.7%.

Kia Sportage

This month is Kia’s month in Egypt. The Kia Carens is up 6 spots to #4 at 505 units and 4.1%, the Sportage is up 16 ranks to #9 with 304 sales and 2.5, the new generation Picanto is up 8 spots to #12 and the new generation Rio lands directly at #34.

Hyundai Veloster

World 2011 Updated: Toyota Corolla above Ford Focus and VW Golf

February 27th, 2012 25 comments

Toyota Corolla

* See the Top 35 best-selling models by clicking on the title! *

I have been telling you that this world’s best selling models ranking published by Forbes was looking dodgy. Now that most 2011 world markets have come through, it is time for a big update and more accurate figures. Mixing up my own estimates with the hard work of Austin from Ford Inside News I can now share with you a definitive Top 35 best-selling models ranking for 2011!

Ford Focus

And if the Toyota Corolla is confirmed as 2011 world’s best-selling car with 1,141,709 sales, a big disappointment is in store for Hyundai fans: the Elantra is far from threatening the Corolla for the pole position and is not millionaire in 2011 in spite of what Forbes told you. Even including the 3 generations of the model still in production somewhere in the world, Elantra sales amount to 745,823 units, placing the model in 6th position…

VW Golf

In 2nd place we find the Ford Focus with 877,640 sales, followed by the VW Golf at 864,452 units and the VW Polo with 788,789 sales. The Ford Fiesta comes in 5th position at 765,511 units, ahead of the Hyundai Elantra, Wuling Sunshine (731,689 sales and not the 900,000+ reported by Forbes), Chevrolet Cruze, Ford F-Series and VW Jetta. Suddenly it all makes sense, doesn’t it?

Wuling Sunshine

Notice the Iranian Saipa Pride at #13, the Suzuki Alto at #18, Honda CR-V at #19, Hyundai Accent at #20 and just under 500,000 sales, Toyota Hilux, #1 in 34 countries, at #22, Toyota Prius at #28, Kia Forte at #29, Nissan Qashqai at #32, Skoda Octavia at #33 and Dacia Logan at #36.

You can see my original World 2011 article here (Caution: figures in that article are not correct).

Citroen C4

* See the Top 10 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Thanks to STAC *

The French car market is down 26% year-on-year over the first 3 weeks of February at 91,400 registrations. In the brands ranking, Renault ranks #1 with 15,685 sales and 17.2% share (-32%) but Citroen is just below at 15,181 units and 16.6% (-23%) leaving Peugeot in third place with 13,581 sales and 14.9% (-43%): the 208 launch is eagerly awaited…

The Renault Clio stays by far the best-selling model in the country and even lodges the smallest decline of the Top 10 at just -4% thanks to 5,202 units sold for a 5.7% market share. The Citroen C3 is #2 with 3,877 sales (-17%) just above the Peugeot 207 at 3,843 units (-47%). Good hold of the Renault Megane at -10% in 4th position, followed by the evergreen VW Polo (-15%) and Renault Scenic (-20%).

The Citroen C4 shines in 7th place with 2,363 sales and 2.6%, if it maintains this rank up until the end of the month it will be this generation’s best-ever position, beating the 10th place it reached last December. The VW Golf is still valiant at #8 with 2,338 units, above the Peugeot 308 at 2,220 sales (-33%).

China LCV January 2012: A newcomer in the Top 5

February 23rd, 2012 5 comments

ChangAn NangLing (aka Starlight) with ChangAn Minibus in background

* See the Top 5 best-selling models by clicking on the title! Thanks to Rutger & Austin *

For once the LCV market behaves worse than the overall Chinese market, very shy in this start of year, at -28% on January 2011 to 363,041 registrations. The Wuling Sunshine is unsurprisingly #1 again with 47,152 sales, albeit down 36% year-on-year. As usual let’s compare this figure to the amount of Ford F-Series sold in the same period in the US (38,493) and the number of VW Golfs sold in the whole of Europe that same month (36,799) to understand the scale of the Sunshine’s performance even in freefall compared to January last year…

The Wuling Rongguang/Xingwang ranks #2 for the 6th consecutive month at 31,708 units (-17%), followed by the ChangAn Mini Bus with 28,358 sales, down 21%. Very rare event, there is a newcomer in the LCV Top 5 in China this month! It is the ChangAn Nangling ranking 5th at 19,367 units, down 17%. Now I am not 100% that this is the right picture above so if you personally know the ChangAn please either confirm or infirm and post the correct picture by commenting on this article!
