New Zealand June 2026: Tesla Model Y #1, Jaecoo up 189.7% to record ranking
First Top 20 finish for the Jaecoo J5 in New Zealand.
The New Zealand new vehicle market soars 13.4% year-on-year in June to 13,440 units, leading to a year -to-date tally up 12.5% to 71,476. Sales of passenger cars are up 20.9% for the month to 9,963 whereas commercials drop -3.7% to 3,477. Over H1, passenger cars grow 15.3% to 51,457 and commercials are up 6% to 20,019. Toyota (+10.9%) easily retains the brands top spot at 19.6% share, distancing Ford (+2.4%) and Mitsubishi (-11.3%) also both trailing the market. Kia (+21.2%) stays at #4 while Tesla (+104.8%) more than doubles its sales year-on-year to land at #5 with 936 sales and 7% share, its best ranking and share since hitting #4 with 7% in September 2023 and its best volume since June 2023 (964). MG (+114.2%) and GWM (+42.2%) also impress in the remainder of the Top 10 while Jaecoo (+189.7%) equals its ranking record at #12, also hit last April.
Over in the models charts, the Tesla Model Y (+123.1%) lodges its first monthly win since September 2023, leapfrogging past the Ford Ranger (-0.7%), Toyota RAV4 (+5.1%) and Hilux (-10.3%). The Mitsubishi Triton (+23.2%) is back up to #5 while the Toyota Corolla Cross (+361.2%) improves 4-fold year-on-year to lift to #6. The Kia Sportage is up one spot on last month to #7 and the Ford Everest (+43.9%) down three to #8. The new Jaecoo J5 cracks the Top 20 for the first time at #13. BYD places the Atto 3 at #14, the Shark 6 at #15, the Atto 2 at #18 and the Atto 1 at #27, the latter two’s first entry in the Top 30.
