Media post: What the SUV Boom Did to Car Hauling

Everyone who follows sales data has watched the same chart for twenty years. Sedans collapse, crossovers take over, pickups hold their ground. It usually gets read as a consumer story, or an emissions story. Almost nobody reads it as a freight story, and that is where the sharpest consequence landed.

The trucks that move new and used cars around the United States are the one part of the industry that has to physically absorb every pound the market adds. They have absorbed a lot.

The Trailer Has Ten Slots and It Rarely Fills Them

The mistake people make is thinking a 10 car hauler is limited by how many cars fit on the racks. It isnt. It’s limited by weight, and the ceiling has not moved since 1975.

A tractor and a loaded stinger steered trailer cannot legally gross more than 80,000 pounds on the interstate. The empty rig already eats roughly 40,000 of that. So the driver has about 40,000 pounds to sell, and what he can do with it depends entirely on what the market happens to be buying that year.

In 1980, sedans and wagons were 83.5 percent of new light duty production and the average new vehicle weighed about 3,228 pounds. By model year 2024 sedans and wagons were down to 23.7 percent, truck based SUVs alone were 49.6 percent, and the average had climbed to 4,354 pounds. Preliminary 2025 numbers put it at 4,441, which would be an all time record. You can pull the whole series from the federal fuel economy trends data if you want to plot it yourself.

Run that through 40,000 pounds of payload and the picture is blunt. Nine Corollas fit. Six Escalades fit. Same trailer, same driver, same fuel, same 3,000 mile lane, and a third fewer units to bill for.

They Got More Length and Not One Extra Pound

Here’s the part that frustrates carriers most. In 2015 the federal size and weight rules were changed to stop states from capping stinger steered auto transporters below 80 feet, up from 75, with four feet of front overhang and six feet at the rear.

That sounds like relief. It wasnt, really. Length was never the binding constraint on a modern load. Weight was, and the weight number was left exactly where it had been for forty years. Carriers got five more feet of trailer to hang vehicles off and no additional pounds to put on it.

The industry has tried to fix this directly. A bill to lift stinger steered auto haulers to 88,000 pounds got reported out of committee in late 2024 and then died with the Congress in January 2025. Nothing has replaced it.

What the shortfall costs is measurable. Trade coverage of the sector puts the load factor reduction at 10 to 15 percent, which in plain terms means 10 to 15 percent more trucks on the road to move the same number of cars. One large hauler’s chief executive framed it more simply: if you could only get five on a load before and the vehicles get bigger, now you get four, so you have lost twenty percent of the revenue on that trip.

EVs Made a Bad Arithmetic Problem Worse

Electric vehicles are still a small slice of the American market. Around 7.8 percent of 2025 sales, and closer to 5.8 percent through the first half of 2026 after the federal credit ended. Small share, outsized effect, because on a weight limited trailer a battery pack is pure deadweight against the payload budget.

The numbers are not subtle. A Silverado EV comes in around 8,102 pounds against roughly 4,950 for the gasoline Silverado 1500. An F-150 Lightning runs eleven hundred to nearly two thousand pounds over the gas truck. Two of those on a deck and the arithmetic is over before the trailer is half loaded.

Carrier groups lobbying for the weight increase claim electric loads cut capacity by as much as 28 percent. That figure comes from the coalition pushing the bill, so treat it as an interested number rather than a study, but the direction is not in dispute and every dispatcher will tell you the same thing. Loads with two or three electric trucks on them get built differently, and the heavy units have to sit over the axle groups, which limits how the rest of the load can be arranged.

Who Actually Moves All of This

The other thing that surprises people who cover sales data is how fragmented the moving side is. Roughly 152,000 carriers are registered to haul motor vehicles in the United States, and close to ninety percent of them run six trucks or fewer. A great many are single truck owner operators.

Around three quarters of new vehicles do most of their journey by rail. The truck is the last leg, from the ramp or the port to the dealer. Then the used side layers on top of it. Member auctions sold more than eight million vehicles in 2025, and one load board alone brokered north of fourteen million vehicle moves in a single year.

So the units that a weight cap quietly deletes from every trailer are not a rounding error. They compound across tens of millions of moves a year, and they land on price.

What It Looks Like From the Buying End

If you’re moving a car for yourself rather than for a dealership, all of this shows up as one confusing quote. Why does the pickup cost three hundred dollars more than the sedan on the exact same route? Because it eats more of a fixed 40,000 pound budget, and the carrier has to make that back from fewer billable slots. Weight class is not a surcharge, it’s the whole pricing model.

The other thing worth knowing is what door to door actually means. An 80 foot rig doesnt fit in a cul de sac, under low branches, or down a street with cars parked both sides. Door to door auto transport means the driver gets as close as the equipment safely allows and meets you at a wide street or a lot nearby. A driver who calls to arrange that is doing the job properly.
