China retail April 2026: Leapmotor (+52.3%), Xiaomi (+28.5%) shine in sinking market (-20.8%)

The selection of models included in this update sinks -20.8% year-on-year in April to 1,315,974 units, The year-to-date tally is off -18.6% to just 5,351,091 after four months. BSCB is the only non-Chinese medium to cover both wholesales (ex-factory shipments) and retail sales data for China so you can get the most complete picture of the largest new car market in the world. Retail sales tend to give a more authentic view of the market as they roughly correspond to registrations to end-customers and are more difficult to artificially boost with exports which can sometimes be the case for wholesales data.
BYD (-35.6%) is back in the brands YTD pole position by far but still skids year-on-year. It is followed by Geely (-18.5%) matching the market and sinking Toyota (-23.3%) and Volkswagen (-43%). Leapmotor (+52.3%) leaps four ranks on March to a record 5th place with just under 50,000 sales, dislodging Wuling (-29.4%). Xiaomi (+28.5%) for its part jumps 15 spots to #7 which is the carmaker’s first incursion in its home Top 10. Notice also Nevo (+142.5%), Fang Cheng Bao (+107.8%), Arcfox (+103.7%) and Zeekr (+85.9%) all lodging fantastic YoY gains.
Looking at the models ranking, the Geely Xingyuan (-0.7%) is stable in first place but remains #2 year-to-date below the Tesla Model Y (+13.4%). The Xiaomi SU7 (+2%) shoots up 48 ranks on March to land in 2nd place overall thanks to the refreshed model. The new BYD Sealion 06 advances to #4 vs. #10 last month while the new Li i6 confirms its instant blockbuster status at #5 after ranking #3 in March. BYD also places the Yuan UP (#6), Dolphin (#7) and Qin Plus (#10) inside the Top 10. The Qiyuan/Nevo Q05 is up to a record 8th place.

If you are wondering why GM doesn’t have a model on this ranking, GM has the most cumulative sales of all corporations, about 650 million, but the bestselling GM model ever is Chevy Impala with 17 mln (cancelled) and Suburban platform (including Suburban, Tahoe, Yukon, Yukon XL and Escalade) with 22.5 mln in 90 years, but it’s a platform, not a single model.

One retail (+22%) the other wholesale (+52%)??
Hi Rick – 22% is for March and 52% for April.
I am impressed by the General Motors’ Wuling brand. It performed surprisingly well this month. On other hand a crash on Chinese market could mean a risk for future existence of VW as a brand. I know they compensate for poor sales of VW with high margin by Cupra, Seat, Audi and Skoda, but VW as brand is highly dependable on China.
The problem is that VW, just like Honda, in historical perspective, is very model oriented brand. Golf (37 mln) + Passat/Magotan (34 mln) + Beetle (21.5 mln) + Polo (20 mln) + Jetta/Sagitar/Bora (18.5 mln) are responsible for about 70% of all VW sales ever. Beetle is dead, Golf and Polo are not what they used to be and Passat and Jetta families rely mainly on China.
Honda is even worse – Civic (30 mln) + Accord (25 mln) + CR-V (15 mln) all together are about 55% of all Honda autos ever produced, but from those 3 models only CR-V keeps the demand.
On the other hand, Ford and General motors have had a very diversified portfolio and loosing a model wasn’t fatal for their existence.
Toyota is in the middle. Corolla (57 mln) + Camry (22 mln) + Hilux (21 mln) + RAV4 (15 mln) are about 30% of all Toyota sales ever. Fisrt all of these models still have strong sales, as well as Toyota has a large portfolio of supportive local models, besides the core models, which compensate in case of failure of some of the core models. Such supportive models are Tacoma, Yaris, Yaris Cross, Tundra, Highlander and Grand Highlander, Innova, Fortuner, HiAce and others.
This is why VW and Honda have the biggest troubles right now, and considering China, the main looser is exactly VW.
