Sweden Full Year 2025: Volvo XC60 grabs second win, Tesla Model Y down -68.2%

New car sales in Sweden edge up 1.3% year-on-year in 2025 to 272,987 units. Rechargeable cars are up 9.6% to 172,507 and 63.2% share vs. 58.4% in 2024. In the detail, BEVs are up 5.7% to 99,721 and 36.5% share vs. 35% last year and PHEVs soar 15.3% to 72,786 and 26.7% share vs. 23.4%. Local behemoth Volvo (+4.3%) stays in the brands lead and improves its share from 17.4% to 17.9%. In 2nd place, Volkswagen surges 32.7% to 14.2% of the market vs. 10.8% in 2024 but didn’t rank #1 during summer as it used to be the tradition. Toyota (+5.9%), Kia (+4.1%) and Mercedes (+2.3%) follow and all gain one spot on last year, while Skoda (+24.5%) and BMW (+19.5%) are both up two. Polestar (+28.6%) advances to #10 with Cupra (+29.6%) and Hyundai (+15.7%) also very solid. The event of the year is the freefall of Tesla: off -66.9% and going from #3 brand in 2024 to #11 now.
Over in the models charts, the Volvo XC60 (+19.6%) manages its 2nd win at home (after 2017) with a dominant 6.6% share, distancing the Volvo EX/XC40 (+35.2%) and a surging VW ID.7 (+140.9%). The XC60 topped the monthly charts 10 times this year. Leader in 2023 and 2024, the Tesla Model Y collapses -68.2% to #4 with just 2.1% share vs. 6.8% last year. The Kia EV3 (+1421.2%) finishes its first full year in market at a splendid 5th place, ahead of the Skoda Kodiaq soaring 80.6% and 21 spots to #6. The rest of the Top 10 is in negative, with the Volvo EX30 (-31.1%) and S/V60 (-29.5%) hit the hardest. The Polestar 4 (+316.1%) is up 57 ranks to #12 and was #5 in June and #3 in December.
