China wholesales October 2025: BYD off -38.2%, Geely, Leapmotor, Fang Cheng Bao break records, Xiaomi YU7 best-selling SUV

The Xiaomi YU7 is the most popular SUV in China in October.

According to data by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), new vehicle wholesales climb 8.8% year-on-year in October to 3,322,000 units. This leads to a year-to-date volume up 12.4% to 27,687,000. Passenger Vehicles are up 7.5% to 2,961,000 for the month and up 12.9% YTD to 24,209,000. Commercial Vehicles for their part are up 21% to 361,000 in October and up 9% to 3,479,000 so far this year. Wholesales of New Energy vehicles (NEV) are up 20% to 1,715,000, with BEVs up 31.7% to 1,109,000 and PHEVs up 3% to 605,000. Year-to-date, NEVs are up 32.7% to 12,943,000 including 8,330,000 BEV (+42.9%) and 4,610,000 PHEV (+17.8%). Exports surge 22.9% to 666,000 including 571,000 PV (+22.8%) and 94,000 CV (+23.5%). NEV exports are up 100% to 256,000. YTD vehicle exports are up 15.7% to 5,616,000 including 4,773,000 PV (+16.4%) and 2,014,000 CV (+90.4%).

Having broken its all time volume record a year ago at an extravagant 414,000 sales, BYD freefalls -38.2% to “just” 256,000 units this month. This the manufacturer’s 4th consecutive double-digit YoY loss. The Song Plus (-80.7%), Han (-74.7%), Song L (-73.1%), Destroyer 05 (-65.2%), Qin L (-52%), Seagull (-51.8%), Song Pro (-51%) and Seal 06 (-44.1%) are all hit hard while the new Sealion 06 and Seal 06 help ready the ship somehow. In contrast, Geely (+50.4%) sports a 13th straight month of double-digit gains or more to hold onto the 2nd spot. It even passes the 200,000 monthly sales mark for the first time at 209,574, eclipsing its previous best of 198,544 reached last January. The Xingyuan hatchback plays a big part in this performance, accounting for 21% of the brand’s volume this month while the Galaxy NEV lineup is up 79.9% to 59,511, representing 28% of the carmaker’s sales.

Leapmotor breaks its monthly volume record for the 6th month in a row.

Volkswagen (-17.2%) and Toyota (-13.4%) both post poor results below while Wuling (+14.1%) rounds out the Top 5. Chery (-2.1%) is up two spots on last month to #6 while Changan (-8.9%) is down one to #7, both carmakers struggling. Leapmotor (+76.6%) climbs to a record 8th place, breaking its all time volume record for the 6th month in a row to reach almost 64,000 units. Nissan (+15.1%) manages a rare gain and reenters the Top 10 at #9. Honda (-21.7%) craters at #10. Another 2025 success story, Xiaomi (+134.7%) approaches the 50,000 monthly sales mark at a record 48,654 units, up to an all time high 12th place. Xpeng (+82.2%) also hits a best ever volume at 37,014 as does Fang Cheng Bao (+408.6%) at 30,648, its first time above 30,000 units and only its 2nd time above 20,000. Tesla is down -35.8% to #25.

Looking at the models ranking in isolation, this month the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV (+79.9%) reaches a new volume record at over 61,500 sales, eclipsing its previous best of 56,605 hit back in July 2022. The diminutive car is now #2 year-to-date, passing the Tesla Model Y (-46.2%) completely imploding this month to #17. The Geely Xingyuan is back up to #2 but sees its sales fall month-on-month for the first time this year. It however remains #1 through October. The BYD Qin Plus (-11.2%) and Nissan Sylphy (+6.1%) follow, above the story of the month: the Xiaomi YU7 is up 9 ranks on September to break into the Top 10 for the first time, landing directly at #5 and, most strikingly, the best-selling SUV in the country! As a reminder the YU7 received 200,000 orders in just 3 minutes last June, so such a sales success was anticipated, even if a big unknown was production capacity to satisfy demand. Other recent launches deserving of a mention are the Fang Cheng Bao Tai 7 (#15), Wuling Bingo S (#26) and Arcfox T1 (#38).
