The Dutch new car market ends 2024 in positive at +3.1% year-on-year to 381,227 units. This is uniquely due to a late-year sprint that saw sales up 22% in November and 40.3% in December. We are still well below the 446,114 units sold in pre-pandemic 2019. Hybrid had 159,705 registrations for a 41.9% share vs. 37.1% in 2023. This includes one third HEV, one third PHEVs and one third mild Hybrids. BEVs are at 132,166 units and 34.7% share vs. 30.8% in 2023, petrol totals 83,408 registrations and 21.9% share vs. 30.4% last year, diesel only holds 1% share vs. 1.1% a year ago at 3,763 sales and LPG is at 2,185 registrations and 0.6% share, unchanged.
Kia (+4%) takes charge of the brands charts but sees its market share unchanged at 9.1%. The Korean carmaker takes advantage of last year’s #1, Volkswagen, freefalling to #5 with sales down -22.8%. The rest of the Top 4 all post fantastic upticks. Volvo (+89.3%) is up seven spots on 2023 to #2, Toyota (+20.2%) stays at #3 and Tesla (+54.8%) is up four ranks to #4. The brands below are more subdued, with Skoda up 5.1%, BMW up 3.9% and Hyundai up 2.4%. But Renault (-8%) and Peugeot (-18.4%) both struggle. Further down, Zeekr is up 901.1% for its first full year of sales, Smart is up 409%, Xpeng up 280.3% and BYD up 160.7%, going up from #31 to #24.
Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (+38.5%) repeats at #1 and ranked first 7 times this year, peaking at 10.9% share in December. It sells almost double the #2, the Kia Niro (+47.2%), also in great shape. The Niro topped the monthly charts three times. For its first full year of sales, the Volvo EX30 (+14302.7%) lands directly in third place but didn’t manage a monthly win, peaking at #2 four times. The Tesla Model 3 (+111.6%) rallies back up the ranking, up 7 spots on 2023 to #4. The Volvo XC40 (+14.7%) is also solid but drops one rank to #5. The Hyundai Kona (+126.3%), Toyota Aygo X (+36.6%) and Yaris Cross (+7.7%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10.
