Malaysia Full Year 2024: Perodua at record 41.8% share in all time high market

Perodua Axia sales are up 17.1% year-on-year in 2024.

It’s another record year for the Malaysian new car market at +2.9% to 856,292 on a revised 2023 figure. Local behemoth Perodua (+8.4%) beats its home market to improve its share from 39.7% to a suffocating 41.8%, believed to be a new record. Proton (-2.2%) isn’t that lucky and drops to 17.2% ahead of Toyota (-2.9%) also in difficulty. Honda (+2.6%) remains at #4 with a round 10% share like last year. Mitsubishi (-25.7%) and Mazda (-24.5%) freefall but manage to hold onto their 2023 ranking at #5 and #6 respectively. Chery (+182.1%) surges 6 spots to break into the Top 10 at #7. Mercedes (-18.4%) and BMW (-17.4%) both sink whereas BYD (+91.7%) is the second Chinese carmaker to break into the Top 10 this year at #10. At #12, Jaecoo is an instant blockbuster and ranked #5 from September to December, this with just one model: the J7. Notice also Tesla up 174.3% to #16.

The Proton S70 lands at #12.

Over the models charts, the Perodua Bezza (+12.9%) crosses the 100,000 annual sales milestone for the first time and holds 11.8% share. It is the first time a model sells over 100,000 units in a year in Malaysia since the Perodua Axia did so in 2015 (101,879). The Axia (+17.1%) which holds onto the 2nd place with 10.3% share. The Perodua Myvi (+1.5%), Proton Saga (+2.7%) and Perodua Alza (+17.5%) round out the Top 5 just as the Perodua Ativa (+1.4%) and Honda City (-12.9%) ensure the Top 7 is unchanged on 2023. At #8, the Toyota Vios (+16.8%) is now threatening the City for the title of best-selling foreigner. The new Proon S70 (a rebadged Geely Emgrand) ends its first full year of sales at #12 with a solid 2.2% share. The Jaecoo J7 lands at #26 but peaked at #11 in October.
