The Tata Punch is the best-selling vehicle in India in 2024.

Explore over 65 years of Indian Historical data here.

It’s another record year for Indian wholesales in 2024, up 4.6% or 190,000 units above 2023 which was already a record. This is the 2nd month in a row (and ever) that the market passes the 4 million unit milestone. As a reminder the 3 million mark was eclipsed not so long ago in 2017. The all time all months volume record was beaten twice his year: to 393,471 in January and 397,947 in October. Monthly records were set from January to June and October to December.

No less than six carmakers lodge their best ever annual volume this year: the entire Top 5 composed of Maruti Suzuki (+2.8%), Hyundai (+0.6%), Tata (+2.1%), Mahindra (+22%) and Toyota (+35.8%) as well as MG (+7.6%). Hyundai and Tata broke their all time monthly tally record in January, Mahindra broke it in September and October, Toyota did so 5 times, lifting it to 29,533 in July, while MG hit it in October and December. Tata stole Hyundai’s 2nd spot in February just as Mahindra snapped Tata’s third spot in September and October.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga sales soar 46.3% in 2024.

We have a thunderbolt atop the models ranking: for the first time in 40 years it’s not a Maruti at #1. The Tata Push (+34.5%) is up from #8 in 2023 to the 2024 pole position, having topped the charts in March, April and June. It broke its volume record in January, February and April to put it at 19,158, however the Punch hasn’t ranked #1 at any time during Q2 which doesn’t bode well for 2025. Notably Maruti Suzuki monopolised the December Top 4 in a sign that it could take its revenge this year. The Japanese-Indian carmaker avoided total humiliation as the Hyundai Creta (+18.8%) still ranked #2 at end November, ending up at #5 over the Full Year.

The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R (-5.2%) stays in 2nd place despite a year-on-year loss while the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga (+46.3%) scores a record result and achieved its first monthly wins in September and October. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza (+10.3%) and Hyundai Creta (+18.8%) round out the Top 5. Below, the Mahindra Scorpio (+37%), Maruti Suzuki Fronx (+65.5%), Kia Sonet (+33.7%), Mahindra XUV300/3XO (+50.1%) and Hyundai Exter (+79.4%) excel. The Tata Curvv (#40) and Toyota Taisor (#42) are the best-selling new launches.

Previous year: India 2023: Market above 4 million sales, Maruti Suzuki Swift #1, Tata Nexon #1 in December

2 years ago: India 2022: Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra, Kia break records, Wagon R #1 in all-time high market (+23%)
