The Finnish new car market sinks further into oblivion in 2024 at -15.7% year-on-year to just 72,609 units. This is the lowest annual volume in exactly 30 years: since the 67,201 sales of 1994. Although falling by the double digits, Toyota (-12.6%) resists better than the market and remains by far the most popular carmaker in the country with 17.2% share vs. 10.7% for the #2, Volvo, swimming upstream at +7% and up two spots on last year. Skoda (-16.3%) and Volkswagen (-13.9%) are relegated to #3 and #4 respectively as a result. Kia (-19.5%), Mercedes (-27.8%), BMW (-29.5%) and most strikingly Tesla (-39.4%) all implode. In contrast Hyundai (+26.8%) and Nissan (+12%) post outstanding results to round out the Top 10.
Over in the models charts, the Toyota Corolla (-29.1%) reclaims the top spot for the 4th time in the past 5 years and despite a ghastly year-on-year loss. Only 25 sales below is a surging Toyota Yaris Cross (+40%) up six spots on last year to #2 overall. Leader in 2023, the Tesla Model Y (-51.3%) halves its sales and falls to #3. The Yaris (+4.5%) makes it three Toyotas in the Top 4. For its first full year of sales, the Volvo EX30 is up to a brilliant 5th place and even topped the charts outright in May. The Skoda Octavia (-24.1%) is in difficulty at #6 unlike the Nissan Qashqai (+35.6%) at #7.
