Europe October 2024: Skoda (+28.2%), Volvo (+22%), Volkswagen (+18.1%) impress

The Skoda Enyaq is the best-selling BEV in Europe in October.

New car sales in Europe (EU+EFTA+UK) are stable in October at -0.1% year-on-year to 1,040,390 units. This leads to a year-to-date tally up 1.1% to 10,796,414. BEV sales are up 6.9% to 169,525 units and 16.3% share vs. 15.2% in October 2023, PHEVs are off -7.2% to 82,836, HEVs up 15.8% to 346,548, petrol down -10.7% to 316,618 and diesel off -8% to 100,863. Among the Top 5 markets, Spain (+7.2%) and Germany (+6%) are in positive but the UK (-6%), Italy (-9.1%) and France (-11.1%) struggle. Other great performers include Estonia (+54.9%), Lithuania (+36.7%), Norway (+29.4%), Croatia (+20.5%) and Hungary (+19.1%) while at the other end of the scale we have Iceland (-29%), Greece (-14.3%) and Cyprus (-13.9%).

The Volkswagen Group sees its sales grow 11% year-on-year in October to 287,000, accounting for a 27.6% share which is its highest since July 2021 (27.8%). Meanwhile Stellantis registrations freefall -17%. In the brands charts, Volkswagen surges 18.1% year-on-year to easily retain the brands top spot above Toyota (+11.7%). Skoda (+28.2%) delivers the biggest gain in the Top 25 to brilliantly threepeat at a record third place. BMW (+5.7%) and Mercedes (+5.5%) camp on their September ranking to round out the Top 5 while Peugeot (+11.1%) overtakes Renault (stable) and Audi (-14%) to #6. Dacia (-0.8%) climbs back up four spots on last month to #9, a ranking it also holds year-to-date. Further down, Volvo (+22%), Cupra (+13.2%) and Porsche (+5%) stand out. Fiat (-45.6%) ranks at #18 below Cupra and Tesla (-23.6%) is down to #22.

The Dacia Sandero (-2.7%) reclaims the top spot it holds year-to-date despite falling slightly year-on-year, recording a 7th monthly win of 2024. So far this year, it increases its advantage over the #2, the VW Golf (+33.6%) ranking at #6 this month, to an unsurmountable 42,000 units. The Peugeot 208 (+40.6%) posts an outstanding month at #2 and advances to #5 year-to-date. The VW Tiguan (+58.5%) continues to feel the effects of the new generation at #3 vs. #8 so far this year. The Renault Clio (+10.2%) and Toyota Yaris Cross (+7.4%) both score solid results to round out the Top 5, while the Toyota Yaris (+48%), Dacia Duster (+44.3%) and Skoda Octavia (+16.3%) also shine. The Skoda Enyaq (+46.1%) is the best-selling EV this month at #21 overall, overtaking the Tesla Model Y (-18.4%) at #31.
