Sweden September 2024: Tesla and Model Y break records, VW ID.7 up to #7

The VW ID.7 scores its first Top 10 finish in the world in Sweden.

25,725 new cars found a buyer in Sweden in September, a -8.6% year-on-year drop. The year-to-date volume is now down -7.9% to 193,391 units. EV sales are off -7.7% year-on-year to 11,535 and 44.8% share vs. 44.4% a year ago while PHEVs edge down -2.7% to 5,193 and 20.2% share vs. 19% in September 2023. All in all, rechargeable vehicles hold 65% of the Swedish market vs. 63.4% last year. Year-to-date the share is 56.9%.

This month Tesla (+51.5%) surges ahead to the brands pole position for the 2nd time after March 2023, smashing its share and volume records to 18.6% and 4,792 vs. 13% and 3,940 in March 2023 again. As a result Tesla climbs from #5 to #3 in the year-to-date charts. Volvo (+9.9%) is in solid shape at #2 but its 13.9% share for the month is way below the 16.9% it holds year-to-date. Volkswagen (-22.3%), Kia (-25.5%) and Toyota (-10.5%) disappoint below and all lose share year-on-year. Peugeot (+25.1%) and Skoda (+19.3%) defy the negative market in the remainder of the Top 10, with Subaru (+67.8%) and Polestar (+67.4%) also impressive further down.

As for models, the Tesla Model Y (+35.2%) soars to a record 16% share, selling almost four times as much as any other nameplate in the country. It cements its YTD leadership at 7% share. The Volvo XC60 (+53.6%) comes in second, overtaking the Volvo XC40 (-43.9%) in trouble. The Tesla Model 3 (+1160.8%) posts an extravagant year-on-year lift to land in 4th place, its best ranking since June 2021 when it also placed #4. The Skoda Enyaq (-16%) is up four ranks on last month to #5, almost doubling its YTD share but struggling year-on-year. Below a surging Peugeot 5008 (+451.9%), the VW ID.7 spectacularly breaks into the Top 10 for the first time at #7, making Sweden the best performing country in the work for the nameplate.

Previous month: Sweden August 2024: Volvo up 22.9%, Tesla Model Y clear leader, sales off -20.3%

One year ago: Sweden September 2023: Tesla Model Y hits record share, BYD Atto 3 and MG 4 in Top 10

  1. Fiat 600 sales are quite good this month. The Avenger has fallen again. Production of the Fiat 500e stops until the end of October.
Are the deliveries of the new EX90 from China or the US? I think the numbers will go up quickly.

    1. The Swedes that ordered the EX90 will first get them according to Volvo in the first Quarter of 2025, and they are probably made in the U.S plant. The revamped XC 90 will obviously still be a excellent seller here.
The new Fiat 600 has been aggressively promoted, so we have to see.
Never in the History of “European Car of the Year Awards” has a Car like the Avenger flopped like that in Sweden.

      1. The XC90 is very popular. If the EX90 is in sufficient numbers, it will surely beat the Q8 etron, TMX and KIA EV9.
More expensive cars are bought in Sweden. The numbers of the Peugeot 5008 are truly impressive.

  2. The Polestar 4 and Polestar 3 is now climbing the Sale List, starting to see them in the streets of my city. The New Electric Macan also, probably becoming Porsches bestseller in Sweden.
Many Chinese Automakers in severe difficulties; Ora, BYD, Nio and MG, only Chinese/Swedish Zeekr making some “noise” in the charts.
