Germany September 2024: VW Tiguan signs first ever pole position

The VW Tiguan is #1 at home for the first time.

German new car sales remain in negative in September at -7% year-on-year to 208,848, leading to a year-to-date tally off -1% to 2,116,074. We are off -14.6% on pre-pandemic September 2019 (244,622) and year-to-date volumes are down -22.8% over the same period in 2019 (2,740,158). BEV sales are up 8.7% to 34,479 and 16.5% share vs. 14.1% a year ago but down -28.6% year-to-date to 276,390 and 13.1% share vs. 18.1% over the first 9 months of 2023. Volkswagen (-7.4%) follows its home market to 18.6% share, ahead of Mercedes (-13%) in difficulty at 8.8% share. In fact the entire Top 7 brands are unchanged on August and the Top 6 is identical to YTD. Skoda (+34.8%) is the best performer among them at #4 with BMW (+0.7%) also managing a positive result – just. The rest fall faster than the market: Opel is down -20.5%, Audi off -16.6% and Ford down -8.8%. Toyota (+27.8%) is impressive at #9. Further down, notice Volvo (+38.3%) up to #13, Mini (+16%) up to #15 and Lexus (+51.9%) at #31.

We have a first in the models charts: the VW Tiguan (+13%) is helped by the new generation to its first ever German pole position. It seems odd but true: having ranked #2 no less than 39 times (the first one in April 2014), it had never reached the top before. The Golf (-28.1%) is in freefall and knocked down to #2 but firmly remains in the YTD lead. The Mini line up (+16%) is up seven spots on August to #3 just as the Opel Astra (+72.4%) continues on its formidable year at #4. Leader last month, the VW T-Roc (-37.6%) skids to 5th place above the Skoda Octavia (+10.3%) and Opel Corsa (-36%). Excellent results for both the BMW X1 (+44.6%) at #8, its highest ranking this year, and the Skoda Enyaq (+199.6%) lodging its second Top 10 finish at #9 after ending November 2023 at #8. Notice also the surge of the VW ID.7 up 8522.6% year-on-year to break into the Top 20 for the first time at #16. In fact its previous best of #47 was reached just last month. Finally an encouraging sign for the fate of the ID series?

Previous month: Germany August 2024: Market off -27.8%, BEVs down -68.8%, Opel Astra outsells VW Golf

One year ago: Germany September 2023: Incentives end sends BEV down -35%, Tesla off -69.3%, VW Golf at highest in 19 months

  1. @blubb0721: how many germans did you talk to ? Ever considered that a toyota or kia probably just looks too scary or dull to german customers ? It’s matter of taste.

  2. Golf sales might improve when mk8 facelift is widely available.

Tayron is on sale now and will probably eat some Tiguan sales.

Touran seems to collect former sharan customers.

Genesis isn’t working here, as expected.

Wondering why Ineos is already losing ground 🤔

    1. Ineos is a loss-making project. They won’t make anything until the end of the year due to missing parts. It will be a time-out to think about future.
All must increase BEV share. Otherwise there is a risk of fines for higher fleet emissions. Golf doesn’t fit into this concept. Maybe it will be more expensive so people won’t buy it.

    1. Unreliable engines and transmissions, unreliable software, out-dated designs… It’s clear that Germans want to support their economy through buying domestic cars and don’t really care about how good or bad they are. They see a German logo and they quickly open their wallets. That’s it.

You should write the other person’s name correctly even if you don’t agree with him…

  3. Germans jut keep buying their brands no matter how crappy they are. They buy a wheelbarrow with a German logo instead a highly improved Asian or American car.

      1. Old German brands, Seat, Škoda sell well in the East. Cheap parts and repairs where labor is cheap keep cars running for a long time.
The Japanese have a big problem with expensive parts, one day the mechanic will tell you, hey this part costs so much and the price of your car is the same. When I put it there, the price of your car won’t double. This is the reason why we see in the East Europe a lot of very old VWs and almost no old Japanese. For the Japanese, worse anti-corrosion protection and worse body painting play a big role too.
If I need a used car in the East, I basically look for a VW in Germany. Mercedes brand are heading to Albania.
We’ll see how it works with used BEVs. I imagine people will keep them longer. The market should decline with the transition to BEVs.

      2. @Pavel

Interestingly, Japanese cars can handle UK conditions perfectly where it rains more than in Germany. Furthermore in my country no one wants a german car imported from Northern Europe that is more than 10 years old due to rust.

      3. @Bryan
The UK has very stable weather. The rain doesn’t matter at all. Central European weather and further to the east has cold winters, temperatures often staying below zero for days. The road is salted, this is very bad for the cars. In Germany, Bavaria has similar weather. Those who want to keep their cars here for a long time must invest in spraying the cavities and the chassis. This is strongly recommended for Japanese cars. I did it with the new Suzuki Jimny from Japan, even though it has a very massive chassis. My friend was selling a 6 year old Hilux. The chassis was completely rusted. Fortunately, it has such a massive frame that it doesn’t matter, but when it comes to pressed metal, it’s big problem. All passenger cars are cans. where the axles are bolted into the sheet metal. I think it’s important to use galvanized sheets and dip the car body completely in a special bath. I think all car manufacturers in Europe do it.

      4. @Pavel

Japanese and Asian cars are super popular in Eastern Europe, this may have been true in the past but nowadays Japanese cars are as resistant to corrosion as others. If you go to Mobile you will also see European cars that are less than 10 years old and have rust. In the end, it all depends on how the cars are treated.

    1. So what? Look at all asiatic markets. There are no european/german cars. Only in China. Look at the Market in Japan or South Coreea. In Japan they don‘t buy corean cars. In Germany asiatic car makers sell more cars than German car makers in Coreea or Japan. Compare the markets first.

      1. Well, their neighbors buy a lot of german cars mainly the British and the French but the Germans are indifferent to it. They are ultra chauvinists.

They really think they are superior.

  4. ID series has made great progress in software, the installation of a smaller battery also helped. This made it slightly cheaper. The ID 7 is a very competitive car. SW version is important for Europe and ID7 completely destroyed the chance of NIO ET5.
The Chinese don’t let it be known, but the tariffs will be crushing for them. Competitors will use this to keep BEV prices high. This will slow things down a bit. Of course, there are problems with the high price of fast charging. This keeps the diesel attractive. That’s why the VW Group maintains the 2.0 TDI engine. I expect this engine to be in high demand at Mercedes and BMW too.
