Norway July 2024: Volkswagen #1, Xpeng breaks ranking record

Xpeng G9

6,456 new cars hit Norwegian roads in July, a harsh -14.2% year-on-year decline. The year-to-date tally is off by an equally disappointing -8.6% to 67,718. BEVs fall slower than the market in July at -3.5% to 5,934 units, resulting in an improved market share at 91.9% vs. 81.7% in July 2023. Year-to-date BEV volumes are down -5.6% to 57,964 and 85.6% share vs. 82.9% over the same period last year. The rest of the segments plummet with PHEVs off -75% to 153, HEVs down -63.9% to 160, Petrol at just 45 sales and diesel at 164.

Volkswagen (-43,.9%) lodges its 2nd win of the year after February with a dominant 13.3% and despite a searing year-on-year loss. Toyota (-35.1%) is in similar shape at 9.2% share vs. 13.2% year-to-date. In contrast Volvo (+31.7%) and BMW (+44.7%) ignore the negative market with fantastic gains. Skoda (-40.5%) freefalls but Tesla (+107.7%) is in outstanding shape compared to a drab year-ago figure. It remains #1 year-to-date with 16.2% of the market. Peugeot (+143.6%) scores the biggest gain in the Top 13. Mazda (+75.5%) also posts a stellar uptick, as for Xpeng (+41.9%) it breaks its volume record at #12, eclipsing its previous best of #13 last November. Notice also MG going from #3 overall in June to zero sales in July, with the local distributor registering every single car on Norwegian soil ahead of the new safety regulation in effect at the start of July. Zeekr lands at #37 with its first 4 sales in the country.

The VW ID.4 (-39.2%) signs its first win in a year (since July 2023) at 9.2% share, but its year-on-year evolution is catastrophic. The Toyota bZ4X (+110.3%) takes the 2nd place above the Skoda Enyaq (-46.3%) and the new  Volvo EX30 (5% share). The Tesla Model 3 surges +3177.8% to #5, the Nissan Ariya is up 10.8% to #6 and the Hyundai Kona up 53.3% to #7. The Mazda MX-30 (+102.4%) and BMW i4 (+29.8%) also shine below. The new Xpeng G9 secures its 2nd highest ranking at #13.
