Brazil May 2024: Hyundai (+42.9%), Nissan (+28.7%), BYD (#10) impress in market up 10.2%

The Nissan Kicks equals its ranking record in May.

The Brazilian new car market gains 10.2% year-on-year in May to 183,214 sales, leading to a year-to-date volume up 15.9% to 874,570. Fiat (+12.3%) outpaces the overall growth and once again stands at over double the market share it holds back at home in Italy (21.1% vs. 9.3%). Volkswagen (+0.5%) only edges up at #2, distancing an underperforming Chevrolet (-1.6%). Hyundai (+42.9%) sports a splendid year-on-year gain and climbs back up to #4 above Toyota (-8.8%). Nissan (+28.7%) excels at #7 just as BYD (+1237.2%) confirms it is now part of the Top 10 carmakers in the country at #10 with 2.9% share. Ram (+208.3%), Chery (+150.4%) and GWM (+105.4%) also shine.

Model-wise, the Fiat Strada (+12.9%) reclaims the top spot both for the month and year-to-date with 6% share. The VW Polo (+11.1%) is relegated to 2nd place while the Chevrolet Onix (+13.7%) rounds out the podium in both rankings. The Hyundai HB20 (+57.6%) is up one spot on last month to #4 with the VW T-Cross (+8.1%) up two to #5. The Fiat Mobi (+46.5%), Nissan Kicks (+40.3%) and Fiat Argo (+17.9%) all beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10. At #7, the Kicks equals its ranking record, also hit last March. Among recent launches, the BYD Dolphin Mini is down 7 spots to #31, the Ram Rampage up 2 to #34, the Renault Kardian down one to #42 and the BYD Dolphin down 6 to #45.
