Media post: 10 Types of Car Trailer

Is it time you took advantage of your car’s towing ability? Using trailers, it’s possible to transport all kinds of other items with you on the road. Below are just some of the different types of trailers you can tow using a car and what they are used for.

Tow dollies

When towing another car behind you, a tow dolly can be a simple solution. The front wheels of the car you’re towing sit on the trailer, while the rear wheels stay on the ground. Such trailers are often cheaper than full car haulers.

Car haulers

These trailers are also used for transporting cars, but all four wheels of the car you’re towing sit on the trailer. This can keep the car more secure and could be better suited to towing rear wheel drive cars.

Flatbed trailers

Flatbed trailers are useful for carrying all kinds of cargo from furniture to machinery. Their versatility makes them one of the most popular options. Items need to be securely tied down when using a flatbed trailer (especially one without any edge protection). You can buy flatbeds in a variety of sizes.

Cage trailers

Many flatbed trailers have limited edge protection (some don’t have any). Cage trailers can offer much more security as your cargo is contained within four cage walls. This does mean that your load needs to be able to fit within the dimensions of the cage. You can buy cage trailers in various different sizes.

Caravans

Caravans are self-contained homes on wheels. As well as a bed, they may contain kitchen facilities and even bathroom facilities. Caravans can provide you with a bed wherever you travel, serving as a more luxurious alternative to a tent while saving you money on hotel rooms.

Camper trailers

A camper trailer is a more compact version of a caravan. They typically don’t come with all the luxuries of a caravan, but still provide somewhere to sleep that is raised from the ground. Many are designed to fold out – sometimes reaching the same size as a regular caravan. They are cheaper than caravans and are often easier to tow.

Bike trailers

Bike trailers offer racks to carry one or more bicycles. They are ideal for avid cyclists. You can also buy bike trailers capable of carrying motorcycles.

Boat trailers

Thinking of buying a boat? A boat trailer could allow you to carry your boat over land to access different waters. It can also reduce mooring costs by allowing you to store your boat on your driveway when not in use.

Horse floats

Horse floats are designed to carry horses. They could be necessary if you own a horse and want to take them to events around the country.

Dump trailers

Dump trailers consist of a skip-like container that can be tilted up in order to empty its contents. They are great for transporting and disposing of waste and are commonly used on farms. These dump trailers come in various different sizes, with most of the heavy options using hydraulics to lift and empty them.
