Switzerland March 2024: Tesla Model Y ultra dominant in negative market
The Tesla Model Y sells 2.5 times the amount of any other model in market.
The Swiss new car market skids -6.8% year-on-year in March to 23,467 units, tilting the year-to-date tally back into negative at -2.7% to 57,224. 4×4 sales edge up 0.2% for the month to 12,637 units and 53.9% share vs. 50.1% a year ago and up 2.8% YTD to 30,215 and 52.8% share vs. 50% over Q1 2022. Petrol registrations sink -17.6% to 7,382 and 31.% share vs. 35.6% last year and down -14.9% YTD to 18,306 and 32% share vs. 36.6%, diesel is off -12.6% in March to 2,048 and 8.7% share vs. 9.3% abut off just -1.9% YTD to 5,477, resulting in an improved share at 9.6% vs. 9.5%. HEVs edge up 5.2% to 7,277 and 31% share vs. 27.5% and up 8.8% YTD to 17,677 and 30.9% share vs. 27.6%. PHEVs drop -6.4% to 1,994 and an unchanged share at 8.5% but climb 2.4% YTD to 5,329 and 9.3% share vs. 8.8%. Finally BEVs fall just -1% to 4,765 and 20.3% share vs. 19.1% a year ago and up 1.7% over Q1 to 10,424 and 18.2% share vs. 17.4%.
Volkswagen (-6.7%) matches the market to reclaim the brands top spot with a round 10% share, it is also back to #1 year-to-date. BMW (-6.2%) drops to 2nd place followed by Mercedes (-8.6%). Tesla (+54.5%) secures the largest gain in the Top 13, distancing Skoda (+3.3%) up year-on-year but down three spots on last month to #5. There are no more gainers in the rest of the Top 10, with Volvo (-2.3%), Hyundai (-2.9%) and Toyota (-5.1%) resisting best but Audi (-26.8%) and Ford (-24.8%) hit hard. Further down, Honda (+148.9%), Nissan (+67.7%) and Porsche (+28.1%) impress.
The Tesla Model Y (+63.2%) is the faraway leader in the models charts, selling 2.5 times the #2, the Skoda Octavia (+54.6%). The Model Y also returns to the top spot year-to-date. The VW Tiguan (+139.7%) skyrockets up to #3 and is now #4 year-to-date. The Mercedes GLC (+13.5%) completes a Top 4 entirely in positive with the next three in negative: the BMW X1 is off -15%, the Audi A3 down -3% and the Audi Q3 down -28.9%. The Tesla Model 3 (+12.2%) and Skoda Kodiaq (+1.4%) also shine in the remainder of the Top 10.
