Czech Republic September 2023: Skoda Scala (+105.4%), Kodiaq (+100.5%) shine in market up 15.5%

A new generation Kodiaq is about to hit Czech roads.

The Czech new car market jumps 15.5% year-on-year in September to 17,208 sales, leading to a year-to-date volume up 16.5% to 167,564. Local hero Skoda (+17.5%) edges past the market lift to reach 36.8% share, significantly better than the 35.2% it commands year-to-date. Toyota (+101.3%) skyrockets to 9.6% share vs. 7.8% so far this year, with Volkswagen (+35.4%) also in outstanding shape at #3. Hyundai (+12.8%) and Kia (+20.2%) follow on each side of the market growth rate, whereas the remaining five brands in the Top 10 all endure negative results. Ford (-24.4%), Peugeot (-22.4%) and Dacia (-20.1%) are hit the hardest followed by BMW (-4.3%) and Mercedes (-3.9%). Ssangyong (+90.8%), Volvo (+77.5%) and MG (+72.2%) shine below.

Model-wise, the Skoda Octavia (-8.1%) easily retains the lead at 9.6% share and despite a year-on-year loss. It is followed by the Skoda Scala (+105.4%) and Karoq (+74.7%) both in surreal shape. Below a lukewarm Kamiq (+10.9%), the Kodiaq (+100.5%) more than doubles its sales year-on-year and the Fabia (-38.4%) sinks but remains #2 year-to-date. Note the Scala has just received a minor facelift and the Kodiaq is about to give room to a new generation so the clearing of existing stock could be behind the two nameplates’ performance this month. Up to a record #2 in August, the VW Golf (+115.7%) recedes to #7 but remains the best-selling foreigner. Below, the Skoda Enyaq (+404.5%), VW Touran (+326.3%), Toyota Proace (+191.2%), Yaris Cross (+168.6%) and Corolla (+149.2%) stand out.
