Romania August 2023: Volkswagen (+57.4%), Renault (+58.1%), Tesla (+4990%) stand out
The VW Golf is back inside the Romanian Top 10.
The Romanian new car market is up 2.8% year-on-year in August to 12,891 units, a poor result given August 2022 was off -22.3% on the year prior. Year-to-date, sales are up 20.2% to 100,166. Local behemoth Dacia (-10.6%) easily remains in the lead but sees its market share slide to 29.7% vs. 32.7% so far this year. Volkswagen (+57.4%) and Skoda (+50.5%) both post fantastic scores to round out the podium with 9.5% and 7.8% share respectively vs. 7% and 7.1% year-to-date. Toyota (-11.2%) is in bad shape at #4 whereas Renault (+58.1%) rallies back up year-on-year but only ranks 5th for the month vs. #2 YTD. Ford (-29.7%) freefalls at #6 as does Hyundai (-43.2%) at #7. In 8th place, Tesla (+4990%) lodges another surreal month, its second best performance ever at 509 sales and 3.9% share, only surpassed by last month’s result (#7, 634 sales and 4.7% share). Suzuki (+107.2%) and BMW (+37.5%) shine below.
Model-wise, the Dacia Logan (+20.2%) holds onto the top spot with a round 10% share, distancing the Duster (-0.7%). The Dacia Spring (+20.4%) brilliantly remains above the Sandero (-63.4%) in complete freefall. The Jogger (+23.1%) closes out the Top 5 as it does year-to-date. The Tesla Model Y (+7380%!) is once again the best-selling foreign model in the country and ends the month at a stellar 6th spot. The Renault Clio (+212.5%) and Skoda Octavia (+60.3%) are also in great shape below. Notice also a resurgent VW Golf (+55.6%) at #10 vs. #29 year-to-date, the Renault Captur up 70.5% and the VW Taigo up 143.9% to #15.
